Angry Front suspension noise?

I would have sworn that we had a topic out there, containing a lot of posts, that addressed noise in the front end. Correct? The later posts addressed specific fixes. Where did it go? Did we cross the line of what FMC finds acceptable? Just curious - I wanted to refer to the solutions and see if I could eliminate the noise.

Thanks - Chuck

It used to be on the Other F Series Trucks/Lightning thread. Where did it go Steve?

I had the problem on my '99 Lightning. I believe there is a service bulletin that your dealer can perform.

Cool

Topcat14-
To eliminate the metallic noise at full lock, all that needs to be done is put some bearing grease (I used marine grade grease so water doesn't affect it as much) on the steering stops.

I don't enjoy sounding like a broken record but I believe we have a problem. Wednesday night I read the topic on front end noise, which had a lot of posts, that included some very specific fixes. I enjoy the hell out of this message board but I find it disturbing that an entire topic can vanish. There are so many nice participants, so many interesting topics, and so many relevant replies, that I hate to think one or more topics can get yanked for no apparent reason or with no explanation.

Thanks - Chuck

4D THNDR, DHFerguson, & gearhead - Thanks for the replies. I monitored the 'Front End Pops' topic from the beginning and was happy to see someone post a very concise solution (I believe it was the last reply). I had hoped to provide this info to a neighborhood mechanic, who just happens to work at a local Ford dealership. Lo & Behold - all gone!!
Thanks - Chuck

Exclamation

I don't know where the post went, but will happily repost my experience in getting mine fixed again. There is nothing proprietary about the info given as this is published by SVT in thier service bulletin to the dealers.

The upper and lower control arm torques were not up to spec by 1/2. The lower control arm fasteners were torqued to 140 lb/ft and the uppers were torqued to 110 lb/ft, per spec as found in the SVT Tech manual. Both of these specs were on the upper end of the range indicated for each position, and helped a great deal to lessen the amount of noise under the front end. There were distinct clean spots around the bushings showing where they had shifted during cornering.

The other thing found, and again, this was related by SVT to the dealer, was to lube the steering stops to eliminate the grinding sound that was prevelant after the clunk was diminished. My dealer applied some bearing grease to the stops and the problem went away entirely. Once again, Sal was right in his assesment of the issue.

I have informed my dealer that I don't consider this a fix, but a stop-gap measure until a more permanant solution can be found. I have suggested they consider using a urethane bushing or bump-stop to fix it once and for all. I was informed that it was already being looked at and we would be notified if/when they decided on a permanant fix.

Wyldman: Your reply is much appreciated. I'll take this info to my neighbor and get my/our problem fixed. Thank you for the info! Now, if I can only find out where the original topic went - Steve?

Thanks - Chuck

steve is not the only one, who can wipe out a thread, he usually padlocks it when we act like children, whoever starts a thread can also, erase it.

MRBBQMAN:

Yup, and I just discovered how to do that and did it after my where are you from posting got demolished.

With no sense of satisfaction, by the way, more of sadness.

At least we do have some control over a bad situation if it gets out of hand. Now, if someone can tell me how to edit out the garbage and leave the good part in, I would be a happy camper. We lost a hell of a lot of good stuff on that thread.

My nickels worth.

TopCat14,

Have you talked to Tim @ Blackwell about the suspension fix yet? Mine pops regularly, but I don't want to take it in until he's experimented on yours first.

Regards,
Gordon

Thumbs up

BadDog: Tim's taking mine in either tomorrow or Thursday. I have a few things getting fixed (right front wheel replaced, track on driver seat replaced, CD replaced, front end noise fixed, window scum removed, and a few creaks looked at). Please contact me at Topcat14@netscape.net and I'll supply you with the specifics.

I took my Lightning in Thursday for an oil change and to have the front end noise fixed.
I told the service writer there was a Technical Service Bulletin on this problem. They found a copy of the TSB, and made the recommended adjustments. No noise since, but the service manager commented that he thought this only was a temporary fix.

Good Luck to All!
