Road Tests a Primer
I'm going to take a different shot at this one. This has to do with the thread on the PM road tests and a lot of questions it brought up.
I have done a rough draft off line of what I know and learned about road tests during my time with Volvo and Saab, a time during which I was fairly involved with the subject.
It deals briefly with the history, moves on to the types of road tests, addresses the issue of ringers, mules and so on and generally gives the reader an overview from someone was involved with it for many years.
May or may not be interesting to you folks.
For that reason, and because it is fair for long, I am asking for your indication as to whether it is worth posting here or not.
If enough people are interested, I can post it, if not a whole lot of interest, I can e-mail it directly to whomever is interested to their regular e-mail address.
Let me know.

Bill: I, for one, am interested in reading what you learned from your experiences. Please e-mail it directly to me if the unanimous vote is to not post it on this board.
My take on the PM results: I can't bring myself to believe that FMC would drop a ringer in the test. They would be setting a benchmark that differs dramatically from their original 1/4 mile time of 14.6/14.7 I believe most owners were/are pretty satisfied with unmodified truck performance, especially when run in adverse conditions (high temp, humidity, etc.). With several members having no mods and running in the 13's (under less than ideal conditions), the PM times aren't that far fetched. Cool weather and ideal track conditions may result in some unexpected times.
Any way you look at it, it's hardly a cause for the urinating contest that took place in the other topic.
Thanks - Chuck (Topcat14@netscape.net)

Bill,
I'm sure there are many interesting and informative items in your narrative that all of us could enjoy and benefit from. If you think it might be too lengthy to post, one idea could be to do it in a modified bullet point style. That would showcase all the pertinent ideas/facts and provide nourishment for discussion on the board. Or, of course, you could just go ahead and "lay it on us". I don't think anyone would object and I look forward to reading it whatever form it takes.

Bill-
I would love to read it.
Steve Webmaster-
How can it best be done?
BTW Bill-
Jim Walker was a neighbor several years ago who sold and raced Volvos. I was a Volvo mechanic working my way through architecture school (believe it or not). He left for a company that prepped cars (of various makes) for road tests. I ran into him at the AutoWeek Design Forum last January and asked him about 'ringers'. He said they made sure the test subjects were all that they could be without being enhanced. I tend to believe him, but, some of the numbers the magazines post seem a little optimistic for general production vehicles.

Bill,
Important information is important only as long as it is available to those who need it, want it &/or will use it. Anyone else can just skip the thread. I vote post it.
