90+ degree weather and pinging/detonation
Two or three months ago I posted a thread about my 99 Lightning pinging. It has steadily gotten worse since then. I have used every gas under the sun and have tuned up the truck since then, to no avail. Anyway, today I took off the performance superchip tune (1715 Micro tuner) and the pinging is gone, along with the power
.
Is there something wrong with my tuner? I would appreciate any insight you guys might have on what I can do to resolve this issue. I'm afraid I'm going to hear that I need to toss the microtuner and get a custom tune from another vendor. As for mods, I don't have any yet besides a drop in filter and dual flow masters, which I don't like very much.
Thanks for your help.

Maybe dirty fuel injectors gettin worse and you just made up for a leaning out issue with a richer program producing a different spray pattern or just gettin thru enough fuel for a normal detonation.
To answer a few questions.
LATREMODELRACER2: I always fill up with premium (93 octane) and I had done a tune up (plugs, fuel filter, etc.) 5K miles ago because of pinging. I checked my intercooler tank a couple of days ago and it's full with coolant. I am not sure if the intercooler recall has been done yet. I bought the truck used in December last year.
How can I tell if the intercooler recall has been done yet?
SVTJEDI: Interesting, should I try to run a fuel injection cleaner to eliminate that possibility?
BRUCEWRS: The timing is set through the Superchips Micro tuner on the performance program. I am not sure what the timing is with the tune installed. I do remember on the Dyno Sheet that without the tune, the truck ran very rich, and the dyno with the tune showed it running just around 12. I will have to find the dyno sheet to be sure of the readings.
CHUCKS BP: Sometime around February 05, one of the 2 fuel lines from the fuel pumps, slipped off and the truck was only running on one pump. I took it to a local speed shop and when he dropped the tank, he saw the problem. Therefore, he took off all of the crimps on the assembly and put ss clamps on all of the hoses/lines. But even when the fuel line slipped off one of the pumps, the truck bogged out instead of pinging or detonating. I guess I will have to check fuel pressure to make sure that the pumps are working ok. What is the proper fuel pressure for idling and WOT?
Thanks for all of the input so far. Tonight I drove to my hockey game w/o the tune and no pinging occured and before going home, I put the tune back on, and sure enough, it pinged all the way home.

Might just have to wait it out.
Just had mine dyno tuned at about 108 degrees and we ended up running 10 degrees on the timing to keep it safe. Mind you we also only have 91 and it is oxygenated crap.
One thing if it is pinging, back out of it. It will hurt the motor

Call Paul @ razorsedgemotorsports.com if the truck was running fine and no overheating issues you need to eliminate the possibility of fuel delivery not being up to par.
if the internals of the injectors were a given then injector cleaners are worth a shot, but with any real mileage on them its guess work at best.
R.E.M can r+r and flow bench test them you for pretty damn cheap.
gotta start somewhere

SVTJEDI: I called Paul at Razorsedge and I'm taking the truck over on Saturday morning and he's going to diagnose then. Thanks for the heads up with Paul. He was very straight forward in his diagnosis over the phone as where the other local tuner I went to was not, and I had gone there in person. I'll update later. Thanks.

Finally, no more pinging
. Paul at Razors Edge, diagnosed the truck and found out that my intercooler pump was not working. Luckilly he had a used one around and that took care of the problem
. I'm just so happy that I can get on the gas again without worrying about hurting the engine. Thanks to all for helping out.
