With a little help from my friends
Two things I would like to do with my Lightning, and I am getting a little confused as to the way to go. Where better to find an answer than here.
1. An exhaust sound that equals the look and general performance of the truck. I've been a bit too lazy to really look at how the present stock system really "fits" together, but is it possible to merely have my local exhaust shop replace the stock mufflers with, say, glass packs, that are compatible with the length of the stock system. Note that I am not interested in gaining, or losing, horsepower or torque, just getting a '50s V-8 sound out of the truck.
2. Cone type air cleaner. The only one I have seen so far is Sal's, and I have twisted the photo around six times and still cannot quite figure out how it is routed. It looks like it terminates "under the hood" where the temperatures would seem to be too high. Sal says it goes towards or into the original inner fender opening, but I could not see that from the photo. My only interest in this item is that it seems to be the major item SVT will admit to regarding things they could have done better. Not enough air and too hot. Again, not looking for huge HP gains, just a cleaner delivery of power.
If there is anyone out there who has tried or investigated these two issues, please post it. From a performance/image point of view, I think this is all I lack.

Hey Bill, Sal here. Here is some insight to your questions: 1) The exhaust. The stock system is two seperate pipes containing the cats, going from the headers to the muffler. The 99 uses a single cased muffler, which has two seperate chambers inside it, keeping it a true dual exhuast. The pipes are clamped to the muffler assembly. From there, it goes to the tips. You could remove the single muffler set up, and have an exhuast shop install two seperate mufflers of your choice. They may need to add some pipe to mate it since the single muffler is quite long, but I don't see any reason why this would be too difficult. 2) This is how my cone filter set up is configured- the mass air meter is in it's stock location. The Air box gets removed, and in it's place goes the cone filter, mounted with the opening facing the meter, and the other end directly in front of the stock air inlet hole in the inner fender. The filter I use with the kit, has filter material on the end, to take advantge of the incoming ouside air. From the filter to the meter, is a black powdercoated steel tube, with integrated mount. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Sal:
Good input, and I think I will visit my local muffler shop to see what they can do to perhaps replace the stock setup with, I guess, two glass packs or eqivelant.
As to the air cleaner, I understand better how you have set it up now.
Next question, and I don't want to get into a shooting match here, can I assume that my already installed Superchip will "adjust" to your filter with no further chip burning etc?
As a point of order here, there are at least a few of us, if not a lot of us, who are not out for the ultimate drag machine sort of mods that are getting passed around.
I spent an awful lot of money on a truck sort of as a statement. The worlds fastest production pickup truck. The modifications I have done or are thinking of doing are not really related to a better 1/4 mile time, but are more in the area of trying to take care of certain compromises that Ford made, as all makers do, to meet their concept of what we as owners might like. "Seamless shifts", what if you encounter 78 octane gas in South America (or even in Lincoln Nebraska) and so on forever.
I like what you and a lot more of the fellows out there are doing to try to address these types of concerns. Keep up the good work.

Hey Bill, Sal here. Thank you for the kind words. I always try to build the best parts, with as little modification to the vehicle as possible. As for your Superchip question, you can absolutely still use your Superchip with the new cone filter set up, without needing and calibration change.
