Would a Lightning make a good off-road truck?
There was a dealership a few years back that had modded new Lightnings into 2WD off road trucks. Everyone here was appauled by the idea, but it really was kinda neat.
The very first Lightning ever made (talking Gen1s now) was actually competitively raced in 2WD off road racing for many years, and dominated the competition.
I think a modded 2WD Gen 2 would do very well in that respect, but of course the truck would have to be setup for it. That would mean changing out all the suspension and such, and by that time you are really removing most of the "Lightning" elements. I'd rather just put a Lightning motor in a regular F-150 and then add the body parts if you wanted to look like a Lightning for off road use.

equally as pointless as a lifted harley truck, but guys have done it in the past
there was a lifted 03 HD at the sema show last year
and i think baker ford or something like that had a silver lifted L

Wow.... most of the folks on this site are waaaaayyyyyy closed minded. That Gen1 pre-runner is really bad azz.
My personal view is that our trucks are regular POS Ford pick ups with the best engine option. It's a pick-up, not a split-window 63 Corvette. Pick Up Truck encompasses a wide variety of things here.
My truck is fun as heck to drive, but is it something super duper special? Get Real. I'd like to see a pre-runner Gen2. Also the jacked up Gen2 in another post looks crazy,(don't like the paint).
I WORK my truck. Haul trailers, boats, dirt bikes, women, etc. At 200k, I will get rid of it. Collector truck? That kills me. A 1967 Fairlane 427 GTA conv. is a collector, not this.
