trans trouble again

Well I took the truck out today for a little ride, and on my way home I pulled out hard from a light and the truck wouldnt shift out of 1st unless I let up on the gas. So I pulled off the road, shut the truck off, checked the fluid and made sure the chip was still seated tight in the computer.Everything was good so I pull out and went easy on the truck, it shifted normal so about a mile down the road I was going about 50 and figured I would kick it down, and now I have no 2nd gear at anything over about 1/4 pedal. Now Im not a tranny expert but this thing seems to be junk at this point, any advice would be helpfull the truck has about 7000 miles and its an 01. Also about 200 miles ago a bolt fell out of the ftvb and the trans was doing some strange things but not like this ,all other bolts were tight, and I put in a new filter at that time.I also used mercon v fluid, but the dipstick says to use mercon,I told the guy at the ford dealer this when I bought the fluid and he said its fine to use. After that repair it seemed fine until today and it was very sudden. Ive had many trannys go bad over the years but never so sudden without even slipping or anything.Has anyone else experienced this with such low miles? I understand its modded and anything can happen, but this is dissapointing.

Gregg has said it a million times here : DO NOT USE MERCON V in the Lightning tranny - use only Mercon III.

Of course, Rob_02 has successfully argued this point, but I think I would follow the advice offered by an acknowleged expert on the 4R100...

Of course, I don't think the fluid is the total reason for your tranny failure.

If your second gear isnt working check to see if your OD light is flashing on the shifter. If its not flashing, youve probably toasted your intermediate clutch pack. Ive been there and done that. 3 transmissions, all blown the same way.

I was able to check a few things out today and heres what ive found, the o/d light is not flashing so I went for a quick spin to see what exactly the truck was doing. If I manually shift to 2nd gear it will still pull out in first and when I let up on the gas it goes right into third. There doesnt appear to be any slippage at any speed ,just no 2nd gear.So I dropped the pan again to see if anything seemed abnormal and other than the fluid smelling and looking a little burnt it seems normal.Just to rule it out, I put the stock valve body back in,but it made no difference.I just want to make sure before I pull the trans, is it possible this could be an electrcal issue such as a solenoid or something? Any guess on what these things cost to have rebuilt? I will pull it myself and have someone bench it.

If it's a 1J, the mechanical diode has failed, if it's a 5X, the intermediate clutch is toast.

Gregg, thanks for responding,as my luck would have it I do have the 5x trans,so I would like to talk to you about rebuilding it for me.I have nowhere local that I would trust to do this for me, so I guess the best thing would be to pull it and ship it to your place? I went to your web site and tried the contact us link but it didnt work for me,so if you could email me with a way I could contact you I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks gk6486@hotmail.com

That code is almost always the f81Z-7G391-CA shift solenoid, it can sometimes be caused by the O2 Sensor shorting out also, if you have headers, but the solenoid needs replaced either way.

It's a dealer part and is likely the cause of your hard shift.
