Slap
HI Im a new member. I have been
following the message board for
a few weeks and decided to Join
in on the fun.
Ima lttle confused regardig the
pistion slap issue. My 99.5
sounds like a deisel during its
warm up but Im not sure that
that is the piston slap sound.
My dealer said that the piston
slap problem does not include
Lightnings. As you all know the
L. has different pistons, forged
with dished tops, etc. I can"t
believe that they would go to
the trouble of a special piston
without designing out the known
problem of piston slap on the
5.4. Would they???
Anyway mine sounds like a diesel
and it seems that so does many
of yours(i hope my fourth grade
composition teacher doesn't read
this letter). Is that a normal
sound for this motor or piston
slap(slop)
If you read through other F150
message boards you will find
numerous references to the pro
blem including discussions
regarding the fact that Ford is
actually replacing engines with
dealer documented piston slap.
I really don't want a heart
transplant for my new baby .
Does anyone out there haveany
comments.
99.5 white. Billet grill top and
bottom. Reluctant to upgrade
until slap problem is ruled out
Welcome to the board Peter!
The sound your hearing is the same sound we've been talking about. Dealer told me they couldn't verify the sound, at least I have it on record now in case something does go wrong down the road. I'll try another dealer later on.
By the way, you picked out the BEST and FASTEST color for your Lightning!

I think what you are hearing is the blower. Every roots style blower I've installed has had a rattling at idle. I talk to Eaton and Kenne Bell and they both said this is normal with any screw type blower, and some are noisier than others. If the noise is only at idle I think you should have nothing to worry about. If it increases with engine speed and under load then it's something else.
Hope I could help
