Troubles with 99.5 Lighting & Superchip
Hello Guys,
I installed my superchip this afternoon. I was really pleased with the chip this afternoon after test driving my vehicle for
about 1/2 hour. Then me and a buddy of mine took it down to really do some real testing. After my second run at 1/4 it died about halfway down ( I noticed that the tach was buried over 6000 rpm while still in 2nd gear and I got the check engine light). After checking all connections I restarted the truck with no problems I decided to make another run, same results it died in 2nd gear at 6200 or so rpms. Well I pulled it over in took out the chip and recleaned all
connections. I then tried a 3rd time with
really good results. My best pass at 13.59 at 102.1. I'm very happy with the time but very discomforting that it died halfway down the dragstrip om me twice. I'm going to attempt to get it on a dyno next week and will post my results. Has anyone else had this problem with their Lighting? I hope I fixed it by recleaning the contacts.

sounds like you fuel shutoff is shutting you down, my tach is showing the same thing but no fuel shut off or slow down. mike had said they did not up the rpm's at shift, but a lot of us are getting more than the 5400 factory fuel shut off point.
Asdeman:
1. Congratulations on being the first I have seen to top 100 mph in the quarter. I may have missed a mag test report that did that, but those are prepped vehicles anyway.
2. As you can read in other threads, I am computer illiterate, couldn't even find the one in my truck. But............
Everytime I upgrade the software here at Hobbytown, the system crashes or part of it crashes. I have to call customer support to sort out new commands etc. that the operating system does not like or does not recognize. In our case we do it manually, my op system has no learn/relearn capability.
Our truck computer obviously does and my theory is that for the first two runs it did not like what it was reading and went to shut down to prevent damage or whatever it is supposed to prevent. The assumption here is that after 3/4 installations, the chip is well and truly properly installed. Perhaps by the third run, it had assimilated the "signals", decided it was ok and let the truck do it's thing.
2. The RPM thing. 3 out of 4 owners who have reported in on the 2-3 shift, as well as my posting that I saw the same thing on a certified dyno, are seeing hhp development and shift rpm at around 6,200. For all of us that is an estimate as it goes off the meter. I believe 3 us are also pegging plus the boost meter.
In and of itself, this is fantastic, we have our very own almost stock racing engine!
My question is, and it relates to my question about our tranny, how many revs can this motor take before it hurts itself?
In theory a SOHC motor with a fairly short stroke should do this with no sweat, but our motor is specced as a truck motor and I don't know how much FMC has overbuilt the motor for the kind of use we are putting it to. It would increase my comfort zone when I am doing my thing if I knew.
3. The shift thing.
Are the two of you getting the same "did I get your attention leadfoot?" shift firmness that I am getting with mine? Our trucks are heavy as hell, those meats are as wide as a river, and every time I break "em loose going into second, I cringe thinking about my tranny. 'Course I also grin a lot too!
Appreciate your thoughts and comments, and asdeman, please keep us well informed about your further adventures.

Bill,
Ford says that the basic motor is the same as the other 5.4's. They incresed the wrist pin size and I believe strengthened the rods. Durability of the tranny will be My concern.
My first 99 has been totalled and I`ll pick up a black one next Thursday. I also plan to chip and install a shift kit. My understanding is the harder a tranny shifts the longer is should last. I have a stock 93 Lightning that had the first tranny replaced under warranty. It now has 83000 miles on it and it gets hammered often. My 99 would start bouncing say if I floored it in Overdrive. By bouncing I mean it would start surging and I`m not certain if it is tranny related or maybe the releif valve on the supercharger.I had thought that the valve was just for heat problems at low speed. Oh well..anyway the bl;ack one I test drove did the exact same dance. Has anyone else seen this weird effect? I see you are happy with the superchip.

Hey Jeff:
First, congrats on getting a new truck. I assume the ins. co. totalled yours.
If that is the case, can you see what they are going to salvage it out for. If you don't want it, there may be a couple of Georgia boys that could pony up the dough to buy it.
I am kind of splitting hairs on the tranny and engine things, I realize...Until I started leasing vehicles, I put a shift kit into every automatic I ever had from the time they became available. That includes a B&M 50 Olds!! The slight difference I see is that the tranny kits usually included some super duty parts to help handle the harder shifting. In the case of the Superchip, we are getting sort of tranny kit performance but using 100% standard innards. Most likely not a problem, but..........
I hate to be a bore on this, but I also have a 69 Chev Bel Air ex-cop car with a 427 390hp with a TH400 shift kitted. It too will break loose real good in second, but it feels different. More like torque than rpms doing the power delivery even though I doubt it has the torque of the Lightning. Who knows, maybe I am answering my own question. The Lightning probably has 100 more pounds of torque at the flywheel and delivers it at probably 1500 more revs and it should shift harder. It's also heavier, higher and makes a hell of a lot more noise which all adds to the drama. Let me know your impressions when you get Blackie broken in and chipped..

Twisted99,
Yes my truck surges as well, if I nail it any speed it does until the boost seems to max out and then its all get it and go from there. Sometimes when just driving at steady speeds I feel my pedal surging or vibrating under my foot. Kinda as if air is rushing across the butterfly's really fast and giving pedal feed back.

1999 Black Lightning SVT all options, (Factory soft tonneau cover, 6 Disc CD, Class III towing hitch), Loyd one piece floormat (Fits well, looks good), Tail light covers (Killer painted black to match), Black spray in bed liner (looks very good), Windows tinted gray 15% on doors, Dark Limo on back glass, Ordered 1st truck 1/21/99 till salesman told me a $5000 premium would be added, On the same day ordered second truck 2/24/99 (BEFORE getting my check back), Took delivery 6/21/99 After MANY many MANY promised ETA dates, Build date of 5/20/99

Hey fellas,
This may be off the subject a little but have any of the superchipped trucks experienced any detonation yet? I did yesterday when nailing from 30 mph. Although it is 100 degrees with 90% here in Memphis. I was just wondering....I really don't want to grenade my motor after only 3,000 miles.
