Tranny life?? Factory tech please respond

I have a ? for you/everyone. Will putting your truck in neutral lets say at a stoplight or busy intersection instead of leaving it in drive increase tranny life?
It seems like it would be under less of a "load", I don't really know that is why I am asking it just seems like it helps because the rpm's drop when putting in gear.

Good ?

I do that (shift into N) at every light already out of habbit. I figured since im engaging and disengaging something so often, I'd be wearing something else out, but I still do it.

I had a camaro w/ a shtty set of underdrive pulleys that would make the voltmeter read 10-11 while sitting at a light and holding the brake down...

I don't do it all the time just like a railroad(10-15)mins. sometimes and long lights. I also think it would wear more if always doing it.

That is nothing I would tell you to do if you were a customer of mine. You are putting more wear and tear on it by switching gears like that if anything. Absolutely no reason to do it at a simple traffic light. My opinion, if it matters. -Mat-

It doesn't hurt anything, but there is no benefit from doing it. It puts another cycle on the clutch, so in theory it would have an infintesimal (sp?) effect on more wear. You are not putting any wear on the transmission setting in place in gear, the converter is "absorbing" it and this converts the energy to heat, doing it would lower the total heat generated, but it's not enough to make any difference.

In the same vein, if you notice at any time that you are getting the fluid hotter than you want, and feel the need to cool it down, the best way to bleed heat out of the tranny is to put it in Neutral and run the RPMs up slightly.

Hope this helps,

G

(and on Friday I will indeed be gone until August)

Thanks Gregg for the insight it is just ine of those things that you wonder about especially if you know people who do it. I thought it would create wear but also though it might help ith temps. I didn't know anything about the converter.
Thanks and have a great vacation

Well how many miles should a tranny go under normal (normal is multiple full throttle blasts up to around 80 ish right?). I cracked 100,000 miles yesterday nite (or morning, around 3:10 AM).

So, tranny and engine (uh, engine means one plug on helicoils, S H I T!) should get atleast another 50K right? That would be amazing.

But, anyone who actually knows wanna throw in some input?
