Where did my low-end torque go?

Not too long ago, I installed a Magnum Powers blower and MP pulley bracket , C&L plenum, SBTB and a SCT 6V MAF and NGK TR8IX plugs. This complemented the 6# lower, JL intake, FTVB and Bassani exhaust. Before, with the Eaton and ported Eaton, it was really easy to chirp the tires in 1'st with part-throttle when tooling around. The excess torque would be felt in the firm shifting of the FTVB. The *** end would break loose and fishtail like crazy with the 6# lower and RWTD's "drag" tune.

Now, It takes almost full throttle from a standstill just to get a quick chirp. A WOT kick down @ 45 MPH almost seems sluggish until it hits the upper RPM's, around 4K and it starts to pull and really hard @ sign-off limit of 5.4K. I know the MP's like to be spun hard, and these observations are by the seat of my pants, however the loss of low-end torque is very apparent. I've got some 3-4 shift sloppiness, however I do not believe the transmission is slipping, the RPMS stay consistent with the stock TQ converter lockup range.

Also to note, RWTD did a tune for me prior to the long AWOL, and I still haven't got a response from him , but he did tune for the SCT MAF and the MP + C&L. My new tune is set for a maximum of 15* timing and supposedly is a "little" rich until he completes dyno work with a MP equipped Lightning.

So, with all this, does anybody have an idea where the torque could have gone? Has anybody experienced this with a MP blower before, and what was the solution?

On a stock block, with the 6lb lower and magnum I made 560lb/ft torque. I'm sure your torque is there, but like bluebolt said the heat is probably doing you in, don't know where you live but in the northeast its been very hot and humid lately. wait for a nice cool night, and see how your truck runs then.

Well, I was missing the torque in the 60F temps we had a few months ago. While tempature does play a critical role in supercharger efficency, I don't think it's the root cause in my case.

Please list all your mods to help him compare and who tuned your truck.

You have a torque coverter or was there a spike on your graph? That torque number sounds higher than I've seen. STD numbers?

I thought the Eaton made boost sooner in the RPM band, which would account for the low end torque you are used to. However, they sign off much sooner than the aftermarket blowers. Why don't you spin the MP blower harder to counter the softer bottem end feel? Why not an 8lb lower?

I was almost about to buy an MP blower, then I read too many posts (in my opinion) where the new owners felt they picked up almost nothing from their ported Eatons, or what little bit they picked up was nowhere near worth it.

Hopefully the above does not apply to your case.

I'm having the exact same problem you are having. I have an apten port though.
The low end torque is just not there. No more boiling the tires off when I stomp it.
I have been looking for weeks for an explanation. Havent found one yet. I dont think it is the heat at all.
If I find something I'll let you know.
If you find something PLEASE let me know..

BTW.. I did get a new tune from jdm while my truck was down (tranny/stall) and have been talking with todd, he has been giving me alot of suggestions. If they dont work it is back to the jdm for a different tune.

Same here, Just a thought....
Try re-loading your stock tune back on then put your custom tune back right after that.

It worked for me once, maybe coincidence??? who knows
but my part throttle punch was back and very noticable.

I would be interested to hear the results.

Master of Pain

Have you seen this thread?

Essentially, it had me convinced that in a stock shortblock an MP blower may not be a good investment. However,as long as you are planning on spinning it where an Eaton signs off (from heat), then it will handily beat the ported Eaton.
