Herb101, or anyone else.....

I need help with heads. I am thinking about upgrading my stock heads. I like the stage II from JDM. I am not looking for a brand specific set, just the best ones for my truck. I have read about oil consumption with some heads and would really like to avoid this. Can anyone help out with experience on their upgraded heads. Herb101, you can email if you dont want to post it. I only say this because you seemed to tread lightly on the head issue earlier. Any help by anyone would be great...Thanks in advance.

Thanks for noticing that I tread lightly were I can't speak from direct experience. The heads I am running look great (in my eyes), but I have yet to turn the key, so I can't really even comment 100% on them. I cannot speak from personal experience yet about particular vendors' head offerings, but I have heard from others that can. Coming from me, it would be second hand hearsay at best. Vendor bashing from firsthand experience can be done diplomatically, but in my view, there is not palce for secondhand bashing.

My understanding of the oil consumption issue is that when the valve guides are modified for MAXIMUM flow and are cut back to not impede the flow through the ports, the reduced length of guide can cause issues like increased wear and oil consumption. Basically, the longer the sleeve is through which the valve stem runs, the better supported the valve is and the less likely it is to wallow or move in an eccentric path. Shortening the guides allows more axial runout and this leads to rapid wear which lead to oil consumption.

There are other quality issues at play as well; what spings are used (along with retainers and keepers) - are they known brand, quality parts, whose valves are used? what is done to the guides? are the springs set properly? You can catch me at herbs at satx dot rr dot com if you'd like some more detail.

Thanks - I can't complain about what others do, if I do it too, right?

You may want to repost this question with a title that will pull more folks in - like "Oil Consumption due to heads" . With only 90 visits to this thread (at this point) you are definately missing out on quite a bit of available knowledge from this board.

No problem at all if you want to drop me an email...

What's up Herb?

How's the progress going? Went to Biff's last Friday with another L owner Gregg. It was ok, I think the thought of rain discouraged some people from coming out.

Anyway, how hard is it to change the brake pads?? I need to do it sometime and might need some intructions. Plus I need to get your the gasket.

Josh,

Brake pads are a breeze! Catch them before you need to do rotor too

If you want to drop by, I have the life size "exploded view" of the brake system available for education purposes. I've gone well off the deep end on this project, but I am actually making progress toward my goal. My goal just keeps getting bigger

This Friday night is the SVTOA meeting at Hooligan's (on the access road of 35, very near Biff's). I'll be going to that, then I may drop by Biff's for a bit - motivation is fairly low with only the Cherokee to pop the hood on!

Herb,

I'll be at Hooligans. I don't need any rotor turns. I may pick up a set and head your way this weekend If that's ok?? Like I said "your the teacher and I need to learn" Let me know.

That should be fine Josh - I don't think I have anything planned for the weekend other than more cleaning/painting/wrench turning.
