Alterntor Question

My voltage wanders from 12.4 to 13.8, and everywhere in between when just at a constant rpm, say 1900 at 45-50 mph, i swapped the belt thinking slippage, but still the same, so im turning my attention to alternator, so the question is, is the regulator built in to the alt. in the Lightnings or is it external, I do have a three month old yellow optima so its not the battery, is there anything else i could be looking at..

tks
jim

i am thinking that is on its way out, it should charge between 13.5 and 14. so if it is wandering that much you might want to go and swap one in
