Help me diagnose my problem....

Well, right before I left for hotrod week my truck had been sitting for about a week and a half. Started it up and heard a tick that had never been there before. Attributed it to the timing chain and low pressure from sitting as sometimes I get that noise. After a couple minutes it went away and stayed away for about a week, except on the odd occassion it was wet.

This led me to believe that maybe it was a belt. Changed the belt, no such luck.

I put a stethoscope(sp?) on the front of the block the the cylinder closest to the front of the drivers side. It seems my noise is coming from the head or the timing chain in this area. The noise will go away with time, but it takes longer each time. I can't decide if it's a valve issue or if it's a timing chain issue. What the easiest ways to determine this, if I pull the valve cover what should I look for to determine my problem? If it's a head, I'll send it off to fox lake, problem is I guess I would have to pull the motor to get the heads off, so I hear. (Not sure if my tuner stuck the ARP headstuds in my truck or not)

How can I test the timing chain tensioner and what do I need to remove, or should I just pull the valve cover and listen more closely when I start it up?

TIA,
Ed

After closer inspection I'm starting to think it's the chain tensioner. I guess I get to tear the front off the motor this weekend.

Had a similar problem. My '02 would tick like that after sitting. Two things helped me resolve it. Not sure which one because I did both. First I put on a K&N High Performance oil filter so it would not leak down and bleed back while sitting, common problem with some oil filters. Next I changed from Mobil 1 to Royal Purple #11. Haven't heard that noise since.

One other item, on the 01 - 02 Expy and F-150 5.4's there were a bunch of bad tensioners that were replaced, only on customer complaint. DFon't know if Lightning tensioners are the same, may be worth a look.

Whew! Head is now empty, must get beer ingested to continue.
