Intercooler pump acting weird.

I think my intercooler pump is craping out on me. I changed the coolent in the intercooler and after I was done it started doing weird things. The coolent would swish(sp?) around in the intercooler tank for a few seconds and then stop, like the pump is turning off and on. Here is a video of it.

Clicky(10.5MB)

Weird thing is that when I hot wire it directly to the battlery, it doesen't do it, like it stays on completely(if you get what Im saying).

Can anybody think of what might be wrong? I already check the fuse, its fine. I need to get this fixed within the next couple of weeks as I will be going to the track the 11th.

Maybe there is air in the system>???
When I got my truck back from tommy mine would do the same thing, I would actually have to unscrew the cap and blow into the tank to to get it to start pumping. JDM took care of it while they had my truck for the motor. -Mat-

I don't thinks its air in the system because it does not do it when I have the pump wired directly to the battery.

What was the outside temperature at the time? If your intake air goes below a certain temp, the PCM will turn off the pump. Try it when it's 70-80 outside and see if it still happens.

I don't beleave people who say that because I have seen the pump come on when its below freezing outside. And thats with a cold start up. I have always seen the pump come on about 15 seconds after I crank the engine.

I know for a fact how it works. The cut off is 64 degrees on IAT2. If the pump is running, IAT2 is 64 or higher.

So, what was the temp when you made the video?

Funny thing........I just had the same darned thing happen. I had to do some unexpected repairs to the heat exchanger and bumper(they got pulled off by my trailer). I get done putting my stuff back together, then added coolant to replace the coolant I lost when the heat exchanger got pulled off. At first it worked as usual....then I added a bit more for top off and boom...it quits pumping. I jerked around with it for about an hour and had about decided the pump must have quit. I call JDM to get them to bring me a pump to Cordova and Jim suggested I check for air again. Sure as crap...air in syatem. It workd on again and off again for a good hour untill I got all the trapped air out of the damned thing. All is good now.

One thing that helped convince me it was air on mine, you could put your hand on the pump and feel the thing running, even when it wasn't moving fluid.

Maybe your is something else....but it won't hurt to be sure.

"How did I get the air out." I really wish I could tell you about some intricate procedure, but nope, not me. I got up on my bumper and jumped up and down. Then I put it in reverse and backed up 2 feet and hit the brake...then I pulled forward and did it again. Now I can just see everyone spewing beer all over their monitors...but hey...it worked....LOL. My guess on where the air bubble was? I think it was most likely in the rubber hose just before the pump. But I also suspect trapped air in the heat exchanger gets moved ahaed of the water going to the pump....so about the time you get one air bubble out...another moves in to tke it's place. Eventually all the air gets circulated out, but the pump must cavitate when air hits the impeller.

All a guess on my part...but it was air screwing mine up for sure.

Or, just use Rocks' method, whichever you prefer.

To get rid of the air: With the truck running slowly open the the pet kock valve on the heat exchanger until coolant starts to drain then close it off and let the IC pump; pump the coolant. Keep repeating the steps above until the air is out of the system. Hopefully it's just air in the system.
