Predator PC Software Sucks !!!

I loaded my factory tune back into my L. Went through the steps to upgrade my Predator to the new firmware.

As the 1st packet started to transfer, I got a "This program has generated a fault and will be closed" message from Windows (XP Pro). I tried it on a Win 2K machine, with the same results.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks !!

I got a couple updates from the Diablo website but have never been able to load them into the tuner. I spent about $50 on adaptors, cords, etc and I cannot get my computer to recognize my tuner in order to load the tunes.

I bought a $5 serial cable from Fry's electronics and soldered the correct tip to my cable modem's power plug to flash my Predator this week. Update worked great, soldered the cable modem's power cord tip back on, whole thing couldn't have been smoother.

Make sure you set the COM port to the correct baud rate under CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM > HARDWARE > DEVICE MANAGER > PORTS > COM > PORT SETTINGS. Set it to 115200.

Set the Predator to the same baud rate, set the update software to the correct COM port that you're plugged into and make sure the update program is set to the proper baud rate as well. Should work fine if you get this all ironed out.

Mine didn't want to update for a second the first time I tried because the update program was set up to use COM port 2 and I was plugged into COM port 1 on the back of my computer.

Yup, good info. After trying both baud rates on each of three ports, I called Diablo's tech dept. I then went back through each step again, but with the tech telling me to do what I had already tried. I kept waiting for him to suggest something I hadn't tried, but he never did. He ended up blaming it on my power supply and/or my cable connecting the tuner to my PC (both of which were new from Radio Shack and worked with other items).

Right click each COM port in the Device Manager and choose properties. Check to make sure each COM port is enabled and working properly. I'm out of ideas if that doesn't work. Best of luck.

Well guys, I made some progress.

Diablosport e-mailed me and said to reboot the PC and try again...

Anyway, I actually spoke to a human there today and this is the result:

Go to the Diablosport downloads page and get the DSDownloader program. It is in Section 5 (Mustang) of the downloads area. The version is 1.2.6.0 and it works very well with Win2K and XP.

Set the software to the port you have available and leave it at 115K for the baud rate.

I updated the firmware in my Predator on the first try with that software - no issues.

Now, to try and get my dyno tune back into the truck...

Yea i pulled my dyno tune out of my predator, onto the pc, and screwed it all up. Whenever i load it in the truck it runs like absolute crap. Not too happy with the whole update business. I guess the file got corrupted. I havent tried restarting the computer and doing it, did that work for you???

had initial problems and after reviewing everything for the 5th-10th time, realized that my particular tuner needed the update named:
lightning-8r9_for_ford_gas.crom

My friend's predator however used the file named:
lightning-8r9.crom

All tips above regarding matching baud rates, com ports, etc. are also very important. good luck

There is 2 different updates for the Preditor depending on what you title screen says when it boots up Booting ford_gas or Booting lightning maybe this is why some are having trouble with the update. I had to plug my Preditor in so my laptop would detect it then when I had the PC software waiting for communication I'd unplug the Preditor then plug it back in for the packet to load.
