That must have changed in recent years. When I was in the Navy I was able to register my vehicles for base (for those not in the military it simple means to get stickers to enter the base with your vehicle) but I was NEVER required to pass any California smog test. I only had to pass federal smog regulations which were not as tough as California.

Someone mentioned the license plate and I was NOT correct. As was stated you only have to have what your state requires, if it’s only one plate then only one plate.

Someone pointed out a statue of California law in regards to California smog regulations and they are correct. The military is NOT going to force people to have their vehicles conform to every damn state they are ORDERED to be stationed at. People in the military make crap for money so as long as you meet your states requirements and/or the “original” standards that your vehicle meet when sold you will be fine.

So, if you no longer have cats on your truck then yes the state of California can force you to put cats on it since that is a federal law that restricts everybody in every state from modifying their cats.

 

I am in the Sacramento area and have a '99L with Bassani catback headers. I tried to smog it today and it failed! The converters are performing properly but they failed on the NOCS (or NOX?). The EGR valve was tested and is working. Anyways, I am trying to find CA legal converters without paying up the a$$ at the dealership. Can anyone help?

 

Just wanted to say thanks for all the inputs. Moving to California is going to be a new experience for me, with all the "weird" rules and such. Kansas and Wyoming (where I'm stationed now) almost seem lawless! I also just found out that I can't take my AK-47 rifle to California. That sucks!!!!!!
