opinions on "octane boosters"

What's the common opinion of the commercially available octane boosters (such as Outlaw, etc...). Do they work, or are they crap? I picked up a bottle of the Outlaw stuff, but for the price I would like to know if they seem to do what they're supposed to...

They do work as advertised BUT they only raise octane by 3 to 7 points. A point is defined as a tenth. So a bottle of booster will only take your 93 octane to 93.3 to 93.7. The bottled booster will also leave nasty, reddish deposits on the spark plugs. A better solution is to use toluene, available at paint suppliers. Mix it at a ratio of 1 part toluene to 3 parts gasoline to get about 98.5 octane. Toluene is hard on plastic and rubber so don't leave it in the tank very long.

craaap.. if you read the label it usually says "Raises octane 10 points!" well a point is .1 octane.. so your paying for 1 octane.. lol.. what a scam..

I will say (though it isn't marketed like Outlaw or NOS104) that Torco race fuel concentrate is awesome. It's much pricier tho.

Just realize that the leaded version works as advertised, but the unleaded is good for a max of 2-3 full points. Not bad, but not what the website claims. This coming from their chemist himself.

Also, the unleaded version plays hell with the exhaust tips and worse, any polished wheels. At least the passenger rear wheel. Mine was left pitted and dull, and will require sanding/re-buffing to remove. Whatever it is it's nasty coming out the pipe!

I tried it on race timing (19-20 degrees) and 18 psi. I can easily run that on a 98 octane race/pump gas mix. It detonated badly with the unleaded Torco in a 2 can per 10 gallon mix. I actually could only run 14-15 degrees tops; I could run that much with the alcohol and straight pump gas. That's when I called and they referred me to their chemist. He is the one that said the unleaded version is worth 2-3 points max. The leaded version can add 8-11 points, but I wanted to avoid running lead through the cats.
