Bolt Tensile Strength

OK,

Today I washed my truck. Came home to clean up wheels noticed one of my lugnut bolts was gone!! Upon further inspection, I noticed the bolt was sheared off!!! I have slotted/dimpled rotors and replaced all the lugblots with my old rotor bolts.

Where can i find out where these came from??

I had 1 that was sheared and one almost. I did hit a big bump earlier in the week, And my lug bolts were not that tight. Which may be the culprit. JUst would like to follow up on it.

Overtightening with an air impact can weaken them causing them to shear. 100/ft pounds is all the torque you need, and you wouldn't believe how loose that feels compared to olden days of how tight they used to tighten lugs down.

If I were having your problem, I'd also consider a little anti-sieze compound on the studs to further reduce the twisting force. In my opinion, with lugs, it's twisting force that shears them, not lateral forces.

Good luck.

Are the rotors zinc plated? More than likely you are experiencing what's known as hydrogen embrittlement. Pretty common problem when a high strength alloy fastener gets electroplated. Bottom line is they are unsafe and can/will fracture and break without warning.

If it were my truck I would replace all of the studs ASAP. Back in 1997 Ford had a recall on F150's for that same problem. My 1997 F150 had 15 of the 20 studs break.
