Question Octane boost question? Alcohols

Can Methyl Hydrate (methanol, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, denatured alcohol) and/or Isopropyl Alcohol ( ethanol, isopropanol) be used as octane boost?

What proportion is required to achieve 100 octane?

On older vehicles, alcohols can damage the fuel system but can any of these damage our systems?

Gas line anti-freeze can contain both methyl hydrate and isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl a. is good to absorb water and methyl hydrate dissolves frozen water. (Ice)

Many fuels already contain methanol up to 10% (methyl hydrate, methyl alcohol)

Some people have reported using gas line anti-freeze in high proportions to reduce emissions for emission testing.

Lets hear from the chemist out there or those who have had experience with these alcohols.

Xylene (117 R+M/2 octane) & Toluene (114 R+M/2 octane) are the most effective of the commonly available 'boosters' & can usually be found at paint supply stores like Sherwin WIlliams or Duron for $25 ~ 35 per 5 gallon can. The following is the most cost effective 'ratio' for using these products:

1 gallon of booster for every 3 gallons of pump gas

SOOoo for Xylene: (117 * 3) + (93 * 9) / 12 = 99 octane final mix

And for Toluene: (114 * 3) + (93 * 9) / 12 = 98.25 octane final mix

You also need to be sure and add ~0.5 ounces of a top cylinder lube such as Marvel Mystery Oil per gallon of booster. The lubricants normally found in pump gas WILL get diluted by the xylene / toluene & the MMO will bring it back up to spec. AN added benefit of running a xylene / toluene blend is that they are excellent fuel system cleaners & over a few tanks will remove 99.9% of any varnished old gas residue in the fuel system AND carbon buildup in the combustion chamber.

Keep in mind, you'll need to get a re-tune to take advantage of the extra octane, anyone dumping it into a bone stock ride & expecting to go faster will be sorely disappointed.

is there any side effects or disadvantage using this over race fuel?

I have been running Xylene for about 4 years now, yes with every gas tank, I usually add from two to four gallons per fill up, plus one 12 oz can of NOS Boost.

My 01 L has 60K, I have found out that she runs better with the additives in the Texas Heat 95F+, However during the winter, I lower the mixture.

Once in winter, I added too much Xylene, 4 gal, and at start-up the truck would choke, and sputter, like it could not ignite the mixture, once warmed up it ran fine.

I have a 4lbs lower, ported blower and many more mods, I never got around to chipping it, maybe soon, and live in the WOT mode 99% of the time.

Unless I'm doing the math wrong, $72.50 for 15 gallons of 100 octane when you include the price of the gas itself.

That's not much different from $5/gallon 100 octane unleaded race gas.

toulene will clean everything.
tarnish in the fuel tank, crud on the injectors, carbon in the combustion chamber etc...

One side effect of Xylene or toluene is, these chemicals at full strength will harden natural rubber. So, any natural rubber seals will become hard and probably brittle with the use of!!

However, it will not affect synthetic plastics!
