RED 92's Breathers

How is your valve cover breather setup doing? Has either side become oil soaked? Also, was wondering where you got the rubber plugs from? Thanks.

I'm not Clay, but I have an answer...

The rubber caps I used on mine were heater hose rubber caps fro the Motormite / HELP section. I think I used 5/8 and silcone lube to get them on - there were tight, but they don't come off! I wrapped them with a tie-wrap to keep boost launches at bay.

I have also done this mod put the Passenger side breather on the PCV valve. On the drivers side I plugged the port going into the intake boot and put the filter directly on the plastic tube it sits under the boot just at a slight angle.I had to trim the hole a little on the filter so the tube would fit in it it has become soaked with oil so this is what I have done. The filter I have the grommet where the tube goes in comes off so I got a scotch bright pad the kind you use the crub pans with and cut it up into 1inch by 1inch squares and stuffed them inside the filter until it was full inserted the grommet back on then I found a old thick cotten polo shirt and cut a square out of it to place over the end of the tube and inserted the filter over it this was just to prevent any of the scotch brite pads from being sucked into the tube and possibly into the valve cover not very likely but I wanted to be sure. We will see if this cuts down on the oil it should only time will tell.

Thats pretty busy Herb, ingenious
My Red-Rocket, the end caps are from any parts house on the generic PCV hoses fittings rack.
I havent had a problem with oil dripping on the cam covers..... I do have big K/Ns on the cam covers and a big breather on at the oil neck.

Its an important mod to permanently eliminate the possibility of detonation caused by oil and the reduced efficiency of an oil coated intercooler. Change you oil at 3K, I had mine analyzed and its fine..(where I get my aircraft oil analyzed)

I'll do it again next oil change and scan and post.

You could put something just under the breather to catch any oil dripping before it hits the cam cover .... build or buy a small plate or can with some absorbant foam on it.

here is a pic from when I first added the breathers......as you can see I was expecting oil to exit the breathers .... so I had plates with foam on them under the breathers and a 5/8 tube going vertical so oil could not make it up and out. You could do something like this but it would not have to be so extreme....

RED 92, thanks for the info.

So you've moved the passenger side up higher? Was there any oil accumulation when it was directly on the valve cover? Also, to mount it directly on the cover did you just attach the breather to the pvc valve? Thanks.

I attatched my breather directly to my PCV and on the drivers side I just attached it to the end of the tube going into the bottom of the intake boot but be sure you plug the hole in the boot or you will get unmetered air and a check engine light.

no, I have no accumulation with them sitting directly on the valve cover (like Herb and others have had)...... over several months I get alittle on the exterior of the breathers, it might be because I'm a tight low mile engine.

last time at the track Herb noticed no accumulation on the cam covers on my truck...

I would remove the PCV valve and use"hose"

kromdom, hey I'm sorry on the P/N ...... I went to Orielys Auto Parts and opened all the ones he had and used the one with the biggest opening....... I go in their alot

Might have been 1490's I dont remember for sure.

like Jeff says make sure you close the 3 open points to your intake system. I think alot do this modd and dont plug all the points....boot, plenum, intake galley.

Yep!

Clay's cover had no wet oil on it, just a real slight road dust accumulation.

Mine was a different story - I could smell the oil in the cab and actually removed the filler neck breather because it was leaking oil onto the passenger cover. But, then again, my motor blew a couple weeks later and the piston in #5 looks 1/8" too small for the bore, #6 looks about 1/16" too small, so I had more blow-by than would be normal!

RED, thanks

Will get some this weekend and will be doing this mod soon (had the oil sep but I believe the PLUGS & BREATHERS will do the best job vs. PVC & oil sep).

Do it right ...meaning, pull the blower and intercooler and clean all the oil out of the intake galley and out of the intercooler fins. That way you will start with a clean air intake system that wont have the fuel octane rating compromised by oil anymore.

There are plenty of posts on how to do it ... and it is very, very, easy to do.

Look in my sig and see my trucks galley/intercooler pics with about 4.5K and also I pulled Todds 03 at 26K and you wont believe the oil he had in his intercooler......his truck ran 100% better and quit stumbling over 90MPH because the oil was mixing with condensation his intercooler chiller was causing on the exterior of his intercooler.....the water would drip off the intercooler and the oil/water mix would head for the cylinders, causing it to pop-stumble-choke....pretty scary looking milk chocolate
