Turbo boost vs Supercharger boost

Hey guys, i've got this diesel buddy that's always talking trash because his powerstroke makes 24lb's of boost. My Lightning makes around 12. I told him that supercharger boost is different than turbo boost. What's the deal???

boost = backpressure

Tell him he's all backed up.

Technically speaking... I understand it, but can't explain it

If temperature is the same, IMO boost is boost.

There are some theories that a bigger blower or turbo will make more power at a given level of boost because of "efficiency" reasons, but then again when a blower or turbo becomes inefficient, it is because it is being over spun in attempt to achieve some given level of boost, and as a by product heats up the air. So, we are back to the original answer. If temps are the same, then boost is boost IMO.

It does seem however, that turbos provide more HP per pound of boost because of the HP robbed from the belt driven supercharger.

I've always read that for every lb. of boost on our Lightning's is 10HP. How could a turbo be that much? For example, 20lbs of boost on a powerstroke would be around 200HP right? How can that be? I hope I don't sound like a dip*****

ONE ANSWER to that question.

HE HAS A DIESEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HE also has between 17:1 and 20:1 compression too. What is his point? They are two entirely different types of motors. About all they have in common is............Well nothing really. Diesels run off of boost and compression. Gasoline engined need a spark and have a thing called detonation. Which is almost absent in all diesel motors. Next time he says something like that just laugh and tell him that look, at 24 lbs your still slower so whats the point? My dads Duramax runs 36lbs and I run 13, but I 'm still faster so whats his point??? No Worries the dude just doesn't know what hes talking about.

It varies from vehicle to vehicle. In some magazine artices, some motors have picked up 25HP/lb. 10HP/lb is a good generalization, however, it's probably just under 10HP/lb on our trucks. Also, as you continue adding boost, the air heats up with higher boost, and the HP/boost decreases. For example, the first 5lbs of boost in a high performance motor could be 100 additional HP. At 20lbs, the last 5lbs may only be worth 5HB/lb. Lots of variables, including intercooler capacity play large roles. If one vehicle has a much better intercooler, it will continue getting more HP per pound of boost compared to another vehicle with a smaller intercooler.

Dont know if this will help answer you question or not, or if it has been stated above, but when you have a supercharger, it takes power to make power.

There's a rumor going around that the PSP Turbo Lightning has Dyno'd

I think as the rumor goes it would be save to say it whooped any and all previous dyno's that Beast has made including Eatons, Aptens, Works, Pro-Charger, etc.....

Now if I can only remember what those rumored numbers were

Technically the entire theory behind a diesel is detonation...albeit in a more controlled form.

Its all about cfm's. ever notice that a Novi2000 makes more power than a SQ-trim at the same boost?

that may be true, but dont forget turbo hp isnt free, they do put a choking affect on the exhaust. there are so many variables to a turbo as well. exhaust housing size, compressor housing and wheel sizes, oil turbo or ball bearing turbo. sizing is critical, which has an affect on lag, choking and overall power.

If I had the time I would go turbo on my truck no questions asked. A turbo is more engine friendlier.

Some of the Diesels are outrageously fast and I often hit 30lbs of boost on my powerstroke. Is it faster than my Lightning? No... but my Lightning doesn't weigh 7000+ pounds either. Like my Lightning I can chirp my tires in the powerstroke on the 1 to 2 shift and 2 to 3 shift and start to go sideways about that time on the street.

Here is a heavy Diesel that can out run most Lightnings and Mustangs. http://www.dieselinnovations.com/

David's truck is right at 6000lbs.
