Buyer protection?

Is it advisable to bring a potential purchase of an '03 L to a Ford dlr for a scan of some sort to verify all is well and that the warranty is still in effect?

would always be a good idea to have a trained eye give something a good lookover, dealer or not. i think taking it for warranty would probably be worthless. IOW, it doesn't matter jack what they tell you when you take it in NOW, all that matters is what they tell you when/if you actually bring it in for repairs. i presume you're thinking along the lines of asking "has this vehicle ever been denied warranty repairs b/c of reason x?" i don't know if they store that kind of stuff in a globally accessible database or not.

I will tell you that the extended warranties always have a negotiable price. some folks mark them up pretty high. If you were interested. 2 yr one shouldn't run you much over $500. i didn't get it on my used 03 b/c I knew i'd throw mods at it pretty soon and it was covered for 2 yrs anyway. however, i did get it on the wife's car and as it turned out we saved a buttload due to repairs to the a/c system.
