Uh oh...Sounds like a tranny problem...?

Ok so lately (MORE THEN EVER TONIGHT) when i drive my truck and its in the low rpms...around 500 rpms ONLY IN GEAR (because park..and neutral are 1000rpms) What happens is the car almost stalls. I just had one friend look at it, and at first it sounds like a loud knocking sound, but its not the motor. Maybe the torque converter locking up permanently? im not sure. The engine in neutral rev's fine and in gear as well. It feels as if too much load is being put on the engine when it is in gear (by the trans causing it to stall) Any ideas? It shifts pretty good, but it yanks a little bit in gear...like shakes. and in drive at a light it shakes a bit too...

its a 2000 with 53000 miles on it

Could very well be a T/C issue. Has it ever actually stalled or no>??? Converter can be coming apart. Just did a 4R100 out of a diesel last week that stalled the motor, the converter came apart, pretty ugly. Really hard to diagnose without experience the problem though. -Mat-

Yes the car stalled once. it dips real low, but i add gas to compensate. i guess its time for an upgraded converter?

Very possible. Like I said it is hard to diagnose over a computer and not having the truck in my shop.

If the converter is coming apart it would be a very good idea to have the tranny gone thru while it is out to make sure the trans did not get contaminated(sp).

Get it over a TRUSTWORTHY transmission shop and get it properly diagnosed before anything. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. -Mat-

Transmission?

Sure it's not just the Idle Air Control? Pull it, clean it out, and try again.

Also try adjusting your TPS voltage on the throttle body... may be your idle too low.

Running an aftermarket lower pulley? May be the supercharger noises (cavitation/gears) that you hear. Pull the S/C belt, start the engine, and put it in gear. See if you still hear the noise.

Some simple test before you go spending money with a tranny shop.

I would have given the same suggestions you did, but did not based on the fact he said he was hearing noise from the T/C area. -Mat-

If the problem is worse in reverse it could be a crossleak in the pump causing partial apply of the converter clutch.

You should take it to a shop you trust. It's difficult to give a proper diagnosis w/o actually sitting in it.

Best of luck.

Ok, this sounds weird, but hopefully its this cheap-
Did a battery test and the alternator is putting out too much enegery (i think 14 volts or so) which is overcharging the battery..which is actually dead. So im going to pick up an optima yellowtop and see what that does.

I followed maxpowers suggestions and it didnt help.

Yeah we came to the consensus it has something to do with the torque converter...so instead of spending the money on figuring it out, just replace everything, and call it a day. Jessie and Mark over at LFP helped me out big on this one . I think the 2400 stall will be pretty good, and definately help lower my 60 ft. time.
