l-menace, That is what I used its called Ice and Water Sheild. Did not know if you guys would know what it was so I just said dynamat.

We have alot of it here now because we are repairing the roofs damaged by hurricane Ivan. It works pretty good.

Instead of DYNAMAT, go to Home Depot/Lowes and buy a ROll of ICE SHIELD.
It is a rubberized mat that has one sticky side. (sound familar?) You can buy a rol of it for about $50.00 which is enough to put several layers (an inch think maybe) on the interior (including roof) of the lightning.

I used to use it all the time, when I had my competition audio systems in my, Grand Cherokee, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Daytona, and DOdge Shadow.
It works Just as well as Dynamat and is about 50-75% cheaper.

I think it is a 3-4' wide by 100' or 150' feet long.

Wouldn't it be tough to find ICE SHIELD in South Florida?

Pros to roofing material:
Cheap

Cons:
Odor
Possible adhesive failure due to heat on verticle panels
Unknown damping effectiveness (no acoustical #s)
Not available in warmer/dry climate areas
The fact that I would have roofing mat in my truck

I don't mind spending the extra money to get the job done right the first time; knowing I won't have any ill effects and that my product is proven with #s to back it up.

I haven't used the Ice Guard that is so wildly popular on the internet (as it isn't available in Cental California). I have used asphault based mats and I will never use one again.

Cons:
Odor : No Odor so far.
Possible adhesive failure due to heat on verticle panels

It has been on my door panels for about a week now nothing lifting yet. Will keep you guys posted.

Unknown damping effectiveness (no acoustical #s) That may be true, but the door panels have not vibrtrated since I installed it and inside the cab is waaaay quieter and the speakers sound alot better.

Not available in warmer/dry climate areas

The fact that I would have roofing mat in my truck. For some that maybe aproblem but not for me .. No one will see it unless they remove the matting in the truck or remove the door panels.

However your Cons are noted and will report on my findings in the future

take a heat gun or a blow dryer and heat up the sticky adhesive before you install it.

I'm used it over and over in many vehicles and NEVER had a problem with it coming unglued!

As for dampening effects, I think you are missing the point. (No acoustical #'s) I think you'll agree that dynamat is only good if everything is covered. If you put a 3" square on the door expect NOTHING. The goal is to get a complete seal from the outside noise and the interior.

This mat is excellent at seperating and reducing vibration and outside noise.

SMELL?
There is no smell

Why knock something that works, is a 1/3 of the price, and can be found ANYWHERE!

Yes you can find it in SOUTHERN states. It's called Ice and RAIN shield. Don't tell me you don't have raini down there!

Actually you dont need to coat the entire vehicle to get the effect. The idea is to stop the transmission of noise form the outside- AND to stop the bouncing of noise from the speakers AND to keep panels from rattleing... Covering most of the surface will accomplish all 3 prettty well.

Earlier someone mentioned putting on 3 or 4 layers. That much thickness seems a waste - After the first layer your effectivness goes WAY down as related to additional cost. AND if you have 1/4 in of dampinging on the floor and bolt your seat or more importantly seat belt s OVER that be SURE to check the bolts for tightness regularly - The weight of the seat seat will squish the product out and the biolts will become loose..

My $0.02

Doug

Doug,

I agree with you totally, I had quite a bit of vibration in my doors before I put on the Ice and Water shield, I did not do the entire door but most of it and now ther is absolutely do vibration that can hear.

I did 2 coats on the driver and passenger side on the floor and I think 1 every where else and all I can say is that the cab is really quiet now. I think doing more coats might work better, but in my opinion it is not nescessary unless you are going to enter a sound system competition. I am very happy with my results.

l-menace: I think the heat from the engine, transmission and exaust system will do the job of the blow dryer

When I first saw it being used on the roof I thought to myself that it might work good for sound proofing in my L.

So I inspected it thoroughly and it look like it would work.

So, I first tried it on the door and in worked well So I did the entire cab and I am happy so far. I got it for free so why not.

Cool. So for those who have done this already:

Any do's and don'ts?

Anything that should not be covered?

Anyone take pics?

What advice in general, planning on doing it this weekend.

Joking about that dumba$$ part.

They make different "I/R Shield" some are colored, some are textured. I still have almost a full roll in the garage from YEARS ago.
