What plug insert kit is the best?

Need some recommendations on what plug inserts work best for our trucks so the plugs don’t shoot through the hood.

Company and part numbers would be great.

Thanks for any help, Jason

Here is a post from Scott Dunn over at NLOC last time this question was asked:

I use Time Serts all the time to repair the spit plugs, I do not recomend them as a mod unless your heads are off! the stepped tap would take off to much metal and you run the risk of leaving debrie in the cylinder. The Time Sert is a repair for spit plugs thats what they are designed for.
I use kit 4412 and insert no.# 44185 this gives you threads from top to bottom. They are a steel insert so the heat transfer is an issue but could easily be overcome with the use of multiple discharge ignition. Just my .02

Scott

I have heard that since the inserts are steel they retain more heat you should use a colder plug. Don has also replaced all 8 of his. One of these guys should be able to help you out.

Good luck,
Bill

Smart move Jason

Just MAKE SURE you get the right ones

I Love the way mine look
They can not come out under ANY circumstance period.
The have a special thread that can only go in, AND NOT OUT,
Then the way Sal does it is, he has the machine shop ALSO drill and pin them horz into the heads, then re-tapped them.

The results are simply perfect, and @ 13 threads instead of 4
; o )

I have some pic's where I was showing someone what detonation does (eats your heads away)
You'll get the idea from them
(it's brightened up so you can see it)

The Look from down the spark plug hole

Hope that helps

Rob Ive repaired HUNDREDS of heads with Time Serts been using them since the 70's! and never had one fail. Time Serts expand at the bottom to hold it in the head. For me a prof. mech 20+yrs. Ive never seen an insert thats was as cost effective and easier to use. Plus I can repair the head on the vehicle. So I guess if your heads are off and you want to pay the extra jack for what may peace of mind to yourself then do so but dont put down there product. Like I said ive repaired HUNDREDS of heads this way and I stand behind them 100%.

Heli-Coil coil inserts are far and away the best method. Solid inserts are not the best solution. They are better than nothing but not as strong as a coiled insert. Have actually done side by side testing in the Heli-Coil lab.

With the Heli-Coil inserts we actually torqued the plugs until the plug twisted in two. Removed the broken part and repeated the process in the same hole. Insert did not fail once. My .02

Thumbs up better yet to use this...

when I foul up a thread, I use the back-tap tool that I actually learned about in this forum last year. www.back-tap.com

they let you chase the threads starting on the bottom ones.

Hope this helps,

Chad

Back when the ford escort first came out all the ford dealers got a special kit to install inserts on the aluminum heads the tool is long to reach down into the heads and the repair was to be done on the head. the tool came with tap two lengths of inserts and installer. Has anyone attempted to use this kit? I have one and it worked very well on escorts and aspires can't see why it wouldent work and why ford dealers haven't used it.

Silver, the heli coil is about the worst fix out there for the spit plug issue. It promotes pre iginition and wont withstand even the simplist of plug changes. Heli coils shouldnt be even concidered. Been repairing them since the early 70's
The Time Sert will fix your problem and never leave you stranded.............unlike heli coils!!
