Anyone had any experience with JLP or Comp stage III cams?

I am about to purchase a JLP shortblock and am seriously thinking about going with his stage III cams. JLP says there are no drivability issues once tuned. I have two problems, one I currently use SCT and he uses Diablo, two I live a long ways away so mail order is the only option. Anyone have any input on how these cams perform? I have heard a few bad things about the stage II cams and drivability.

It is the other way around with diveabilty with stage III cams not stage II I run stage II cams in my JDM built long block motor no problems what so ever the idle sound is awesome

I run the stage 3 daily and at idle the truck rocks like a big cammed big block, but no issues on drivebility. Even old men give me the thumbs up all of the time.

Never heard the stage III, but the Stage II are sissy cams, at idle you can barely tell they are in there, IMO they sound more like a coilpack is loose. That's why I won't buy them, 40 odd hp on a good day for over 1000 dollars not including install and sounds like I have an LS1 with a hotcam....no thanks.

Don't beat around the bush, do 'ya?!!!! I have the Stage II and my biggest complaint with them is like you said they sound like you have a little miss, not like a big cam. I finally tuned mine to run open loop all the time and richened the A/F at idle to smooth it out some. It's not big enough to sound good, but too big to be smooth.

I speak the truth

If you want sound then don't waste your money, if it's part of the horsepower puzzle then maybe.

My concern was being able to get the truck through California's smog program; wasn't sure if the Stage II's would make it.

jlp stage 2 cams, $600 plus $100 for cam sprockets... thats what i paid for mine when it went into my built engine. stock manifolds, bassani high flow mid pipes and catback with x-pipe and i love the sound of my truck. the high flow mid pipes definetly helped out on the sound department.

We don't have no Stinking emission test

If I do it next year, I was thinking about stage III cams, But, I was wondering about loss of vaccum, spring life. that some had brought up possible problems in the past.

cal50 is there anything like I mentioned above that you've experianced??
anybody else runing that big a cam have issues / answers ?
I know Don had custom grind cams that fell between II & IIIs and does'nt seem to have issues.

The vacuum is at 10 lbs at idle, so, so far so good. You will have to push harder on the brakes if you want to stop faster, no biggy.

Stage III Cams

I'm running JLP's Stage III cam setup and I'm very pleased with them. I'm using an SCT Tuner and streetability has been good with gobs of HP and Torque. On my race tune they are making 646 RWHP and 713 RWTorque. Street tune with pump gas still breaks 600 RWHP and spins about 670 ft. lbs. of torque to the F1's which cry uncle at anything below 70 MPH.
