Question What would you pay?

First of all, let me start off by saying this is NOT a classified ad. It's no big secret that I want to sell my 01 this year, I've said it before, and it's been up for sale before.

What I want to know, is what would people WANT, when it comes time to sell it. I'm a little up in the air on what form I want to sell the truck in, and I'd like some feedback on what people would buy if they were interested.

A - Sell the truck as is, minus the motor. It would have everything else in it, that's in it now. All the mods, the monster box, the nitrous, the turbo setup. The customer adds his own motor.

B - Sell the truck with all mods, put a stock Lightning motor back in, and fully tune it with the turbo setup. Naturally with a stock motor it would be limited to about mid 11s, but would be a sweet daily driver street/strip truck.

C - Sell the truck with all mods removed, all stock parts back in, stock motor back in, as a nice clean stock 01 with a roll bar.

D - Sell the truck as it is now, full boogie, loaded for bear, as a low 10/high 9 second strip truck.

I'd like to hear what everyone would choose if they had the choice, and what kind of price you'd be willing to pay for the version you chose.

Keep in mind that this truck only has 7900 miles on it. And all the graphics are decals, and can be removed. So the body is a nice, 7900 mile, red 01. Also, whoever buys the truck gets all the original parts with it, as I have kept them all.

Thanks in advance for the help!

First of all, why are you selling? Getting another Lightning?

Second of all, I have no idea what it's worth

For what its worth , if I were to but your truck i wouldnt want to spend any more than 30-40 k granted i know you probaly have well over 50k in it. i would want a truck with a built motor, transmission, mabe a ported eaton or the works 112 you used to run on it. headders exhaust, clean basicaly basicly id want to buy a truck "if i were looking for one" that is a reliable 500-550 rwhp street able, and by stretable i mean you could drive it everyday without any discomfort or trouble and id probaly pay around 35-38 k for that. just my .0000002 and 1/4 cents

Id probably either want the whole thing, ready for racing which is D, or ready for a driveline, which is A. A truck with a roll bar and all the stuff done to it will never feel or look stock, so why try to make it look half done, it would be foolish for someone not really into the sport to buy it with stock engine and such, but with a roll bar and a cowl hood, he’d look foolish on the road, if he never finished it.

Sal,
I would think the most money would behad with your truck with a built motor and supercharger of choice, not turbo. (even if its just the shortblock).
That seems to be the direction a lot of guys end up going anyway.

The turbo is just too untested in the Ls and not a lot of stock block caged trucks around (especially with the 11.49 rule now).

An 01 w/ a new built motor, nitrous, cage, built tranny should net you in the high 20s low 30s.

Unfortunately are Ls have decreased. I have seen 01s w/ 15,000miles for under 20K on E-bay.

I wish you the best of luck whichever direction you decide.

SAL, THE ANSWER IS EASY HERE.
It will appeal to a larger group of people in stock (or close to stock) form. Just like anything else if you leave it all modded up you will have much fewer people that are in interested and that can afford it. Since I'm selling my L I've started removing all my mods. The average person will not give you an extra penny for your mods! Of course if you find that exact person that wants the truck exactly like you have it then you and him (or her) will hit the jackpot! I'm been thinking about selling my bedcover, bed rug (if it will come out without damaging the bed) lift bars, lower pulley, QA-1's, Hellwig anti sway bars, e-fan, big brake kit, hood, Apten blower, four position chip, underdrive pulleys, extra set of 99/2000 wheels, harness bar, XM radio, long tube headders (if someone wants them bad enough to remove them plus cash. Even at 50% of new cost this is going to be a lot more money than I could possibility get leaving it all on the truck. Unless like I said on your truck you find someone wanting to do the same thing you did and want to save some big bucks!!! I doubt there are many people looking for a Lightning set up to run road courses as in my case though.

Good luck whatever you do.

By the way did you talk to anyone about my trans temp maybe pulling timimg?

It's hard to sell a Highly modified vehicle because most people don't have the cash to buy it. They need to finance, and banks won't give much more than $22-$24k for a low mileage 01. So build it as well as you can to sell for a couple thousand over what banks will finance at, as someone could add some cash on top of what they finance. With a cage I think it at least needs a built bottem end though.

I think the top price would be $30k - basically $20k for the truck and $10K for all the mods that make it a low 10 sec performer.

2 opinions:

1. Sell the truck with a moderately built engine with a s/c. Reason being is that is what the L came with and you can tune it and send it on it's way. With the turbo, the future owner might be calling you over and over again, to TWEAK this or that. If you want the most $$$ out of it, make it dependable so that whoever buys it is happy and you don't have to deal with a headache. You've done thousands of S/C applications, and you can even richen it up and make the timing conservative..

2. Take all the parts off and offer them really cheap to your loyal customers and sell the truck stock. However, I think it would be more of a PITA to return it to stock, than to go forward.

Actually on Kbb.com the value of my lightning has gone up a few hundred from the last time I checked.

You'll get the most out of it by returning it to stock. Sad fact, but I've lost my azz enough times selling modded vehicles to know you get NOTHING for the work and parts you put in.

The REAL questions that beg to be asked.. are you getting another L? Are you still going to tune our L's? Just promise me you're staying in the game big man.

I'd put your roll bar in Nitrous Ronbo's Truck while you got it,
switch windows with him, swap transmissions, and then put a stock motor in yours, and tell everyone it's a built motor/trans

Ok 2nd opinion
Sell it just the way it is, with the Turbo, the best of everything just waiting for some record breaking runs and ET's

All someone has to do is register it, and go straight to the track. Priced @ 27-30K

Thanks for the replies so far, it's exactly what I was looking for. I'm sure this thread will help some other people who may be looking to sell their trucks as well.

I am not getting out of the game, and I am not getting out of Lightnings. I have just decided that it's time for this truck to go. There are several reasons. For one, I do not get enjoyment from it anymore. I haven't in a long time. I loved my 99, I drove it everyday it was sunny out. My 01 has been a race truck since day one. I never really got to enjoy it. It's fun when it's running good, but it costs lots of money when it's not. It pretty much hasn't moved in almost 2 years, aside from the test run with the Procharger at L Fest. It sits in the corner, but still costs me over 7k a year between payments and insurance. I have no desire go forward with the truck and make it a legal 9 second truck. I've already got over 65k into it, and I do not want to sink another 20k into it doing the chassis and making it 9 second legal. If you all remember Jason Browns truck, it was an incredible machine. But it also took him 4 years of having it for sale to get rid if it, and when he did, he got barely a 1/4 of what he had into it. The worst part is that when the truck is that fast, you can't race it in any classes, it just doesn't meet any class requirements. And nobody in their right mind is going to race a 100+k truck in a class that pays out $300 to win. I don't want to be in that same boat.

Also keep in mind that I have other vehicles, and that PSP services ALL Ford vehicles, not just Lightnings. I don't need a Lightning to promote the business anymore, and while I'm not trying to get OUT of Lightnings, I am trying to shed my "Lightning-only" image. That is why I am building the Thundersnake. With a Lightning motor in a vintage Mustang, this car should attract a ton of attention, and still keep me connected with my Lightning brothers. It WILL be a legal 9 second car, and I can make 9 second passes without breaking it after every run like trying to move a 4700lb truck.

So fear not my friends! Sal is here to stay.

I'd suggest putting a built long block and whipple on it. Make a 10 sec pass or two.. And sell it as a "10 second - turn key" ride.

Surely someout there would pony up for that? After seeing what it takes to buy one and build it up yourself... I'd think it would be a bargain for the new buyer.

Sal,
IF you want to get the most out of it, take off the mods, sell them, and put the truck back to a dependable version.
YOU Know the mods add ZERO to the value of the truck.

I can't blame you for selling it, once you start modding, these trucks become a money PIT.

I was looking forward to seeing how the turbo ran at the tack though.

Any idea WHEN you will be selling it?

Just incase people haven't seen it... I have a video of the ThunderSnake... However, it is TOO large for me to host on my server. (34mb)

Sell the truck as it is now, full boogie
Fullboogie baby!

BTW, you'll get a lot more money out of the sale if you sell it as a rolling chassis and part out the rest.
