12 second club

+

blown motor club

all in the same night!

The motor has oil all over the driver's side, but I can't find any holes. Knocks and rattles bad - sounds like the top, front of the engine.

A/F was good - the truck just fell over at the end of the 1/4 (top of third) and started to knock. No detonation warning and no AF lean spike.

The oil seems to be up high, like starting on the head - what else could this be?

That really is unfortunate. Did you blow the head gasket?

WELCOME!!!!!

This is a fun club to be in, ain't it?

When my last engine blew, it smoked tons out the exhaust, and dripped a little oil. Oil from my breather on pass. side. No holes in the block and it would run but made grinding/knocking sounds.

When the engine was pulled, found out I broke one connecting rod and bent another one, this cracked the block.

You might have just lifted the head BUT that doesnt explain the noises

I was hoping (in vien) for something simpler, but no dice.

I puller the driver's side tire, inner wheel well and exhaust manifold to get a better look. There is a hole about the size of a quarter in the side of the block at the location for rods 2 and 6.

Time to open the bids for a replacement....

I'm probably going to go to JLP and see if the short block deal is still available.

What a biatch!

Herb

ps - my son's F150 lost its brakes today too. Twisted a pad and ruptured the caliper piston boot. Needs a rotor, pads, and a new caliper.

Sorry - I'm a bit sensitive right now....

There is nothing wrong with my original statement. The rods for 2 and 6 share a crank journal, as do 1+5, 3+7 and 4+8. Either rod breaking on the second crank journal could create a hole in the same general area and it could be on either side of the motor as the crank rotate in similar proximity to both walls. the hole is on the driver's side at the location of the 2nd crank journal (not including the mains).

Herb,

Sorry to hear about your loss. What you went through is what everyone (even myself) dreads. I hope everything fairs out for you man.

When you get a chance Herb e-mail me at:

Thanks Chris,

I was under the nieve impression that, for as bad as our rods are, they would be OK until I was in the mid to low 12s with 450 to 500 RWHP. I wasn't counting on a problem pushing only 400 RWHP.

Oh well....

If the lows weren't so low, the highs wouldn't feel so good.

It's time to pay the piper.

Sorry about your troubles Herb. Did this happen at SAR last night? It didn't seem too cold. What mods were you running?

Yeah, it was at SAR, just before 11 pm.

I'm running a 5lb lower, a 12" open filter, hi-flow midpipes and a Superchip. I've got NGK BR7s gapped at 36 and I've also got LFP bars and was running ET Streets.

It was only about 53 degress out, so It wasn't that cold - DA was in the negative 100s though.

I had recently cleaned my WAY dirty IC, so maybe my power was up more than I thought. I was watching the wideband and saw no warning there. I dyno'ed at 400/510 back in October with a good AF curve.

In hindsight, the way dirty IC may have been a sign of problems by virture of excessive blow-by. I may have had some piston or ring damage that helped contribute. I couldn't seem to trap better than 105, so that may have been foreshadowing the bad news.

hey herb, who is your tuner? i'm guessing JDM since you have a superchips? just tryin to figure out some variables. sorry about your motor though, but look at it this way, it's a good excuse to build a bad *** motor and have a 10 sec daily driver.

LOL - excuses for a 10 sec. DD

GOD I WISH!

The chip was a JDM 'off-the-shelf' tune. I wasn't too worried about it after I saw the good, flat AF on the dyno, but there is obviously more to it than that.

I'm thinking of the SCT Pro Racer+ Raptor or the Sniper with datalogging when I go back together. I don't think my truck will ever be finished and I'd hate to think of the cost of a new tune for ever mod. There's no way (at least not in this lifetime) that I can afford everything at once and a single, final tune.

I saw the 10 sec Ls at FFW in Houston for the first time and I was hooked. I want to be there, but oh the road will be slow.

Herb,

My heart goes out to ya bud!

as much as it sucks, you seem to be taking it fairly good.
