Question Installed FTVB, O/D light flashing.......

I installed the FTVB yesterday. Simple install. Everytime I start the truck, Reverse doesnt work unless I power brake it to build up pressure (what I was told to do by a friend).

Also, the overdrive light on the gear selector handle flashes sometimes.

I took my time, and had nothing go wrong. Im hoping it may be fluid related. I used the right kind, but there may be a bit too much..... Can I syphon some out from the fill-hole, or do I need to get underneath.

You sure you have enough fluid but if you do have to much you can just take the plug out for a second and put it back in to bring the level down.

When the Overdrive light blinks it’s an indication of a possible electrical problem. In any case when the Overdrive light blinks it means the transmission is in failsafe mode.

There are two fuses I know of that you can check and insure they are not “open”. The first one is in the Passenger compartment fuse panel (lower left bottom of dash, next to your left knee) In there fuse # 29 (5A) is for the transmission overdrive control switch.

The second one is located in the Power distribution box which is in the engine bay (drivers side). In there fuse # 23 (15A) is for the HEGO sensor of the transmission.

Check those two fuses and insure they are ok. Otherwise is it possible you forgot to do something, replace something when installing the FTVB?

If anyone can help it would be Gregg Evens the transmission expert…

you could have over tightened the vb. did you get the filter back in properly. Just some ideas for you to ponder

If none of the above fixes it, GET IT OUT right away!!!! It's possible that the direct 321 valve is stuck and if it's not engaging the direct clutch on reverse engage, this is about the only an accumulator can damage the transmission. The chance of this being the problem are pretty remote, (sounds like low fluid or air purge in the reverse circuit more than this, but it's possible) but if this is indeed the problem, it could burn up the direct clutch. NEVER powerbrake a 4R100 in reverse, it'll burn it up pretty easily that way, reverse is weak to begin with, it's got a reverse problem and powerbraking raises fluid temps very fast, so that's just a really bad idea.

Normally, if this is happening, the OD light will come on as soon as you put it in reverse or as soon as it gets to the first 2-3 shift, and stay on after that until the engine is turned off, the code it will throw is gonna be P1723 more than likely. Could also throw a P1732 or P1784. Like I said, I doubt this is the problem, but if there is any possibility that it is I want to make sure you don't do anything to it.

Hope this helps,

G

I just got to work. I'm going to check the fluid level when the truck cools down. The O/D light doesnt come on if I dont do the powerbrake thing, which I'm not going to do anymore. When I did do it, I never went more than 2,000 rpms.

The last 2 times I drove it I put it in reverse and just jet it do its own thing. It took about 10-20 seconds to engage, but the O/D light never came on.

Thanks for the help

Assuming that he has the 4x4 pan.
If he retained the stock pan, then draing some fluid out could get messy.

yeah, I went w/ the 4x4 pan. That drain plug was the biggest reason. I made such a mess at the Auto and Crafts shop here at FT. Belvoir taking the stock pan off.

Well I think I have too much fluid in. While cold it reads at the top of the hot line. But not into the do-not-add.

I'm going to drive around and check it while hot.

Can I syphon some out with a thin hose, or do I have to use the drain plug?

Are you sure you got the filter snapped into place correctly? You did not leave the old filter's O-ring gasket in the hole, did you?

Use the drain plug.

The old filter came out with the o-ring gasket. Peach color.
