New Lightning

I just recently bought a used 'L' - really didn't know what all it had in it, but a bunch of research revealed a Hotchkiss Suspension, PSP power package and a Bassani True Duals Exhaust. It's handles like a slot car and can't keep the tires planted even with just a moderate throttle - had to take it to the dyno to find out what it was doing. Just got back from Shreve Automotive here in Kenner, La. - they have a Mustang dyno and do a lot of tuning for a lot of the locals.

Here's the numbers:

398.5 RWHP @ 4750 rpm
606.5 lb/ft RWTQ @ 2500 rpm

A/F was a little fat on the top end, but it's still not bad.

We were all blown away with the numbers - the owner/operator rechecked all of his settings and verified that they were correct. They had also just finished another vehicle in front of me that had been in there before and it was reading properly also, so...........

They also did a simulated 1/4 mile run which they said has been proven to be really close to what it would pull at the local track - just nailing it from idle produced a simulated 12.53 @ 111.09 with a 1.97 60' and a lot of spin from the F-1's.

Will really be interesting to take it to the track and see how close it is.

First of all - it's a Mustang dyno which normally reads lower HP numbers than a DynoJet will - the torque numbers, I can't say anything about except that this guy has been doing this for years - very reputable shop down here and he said the numbers, although high, were what the dyno was giving him and it had just been run and verified with another car with known values prior to mine.

Sal at PSP was the one who coded the chip up - maybe he will have some comment on this.

Those are huge numbers on a Mustang Dyno, but it seems way to high especially for your mods. Something must be off with the Dyno or the way the pull was done as the L's need pulled from 3rd gear.

A Mustang Dyno is what I use to tune my Lightning as I like it being loaded during the tuning process. On my old race tune I put down 332 Hp on the Mustang Dyno and later went on a DynoJet - same tune was 412 HP & 517 TQ.

On the Nitrous Tune I put down 382 HP & 460 TQ on the Mustang Dyno, my truck has run 12.04 @ 113 Mph in the crappy air & elevation of Phoenix, AZ.

It was pulled in 3rd and the mods I list are only what I'm currently aware of - there may be more in there than I'm aware of, but I don't know yet - I bought it like this. I'll be on a Dynojet over in B'ham in a couple of weeks - will be some good comparisons then.

Got back with the dyno operator and finally found where the dyno run went wrong - turns out the torque numbers were from the torque converter 'flash' when the run was started too low - factoring it all out and looking at the true torque peak - it shows at 527 lb/ft@3450 rpm - a much more realistic number.

So, the final numbers are actually:
398.5 RWHP@4750 rpm
527 lb/ft RWTQ @ 3450 rpm

Makes a lot more sense now...............thank goodness.

Sorry if it offended anyone - it wasn't intentional.

Sorry if it offended anyone. I dont think anyone was offended. We have been around Lightnings for a long time. So when we see dyno numbers we can tell if they are off or not. Anyway welcome tto F150 online and enjoy you L
