Diff between standard 160 stat and Hypertech?

Just curious I just got a 160 degree thermostat from LFP for $7 to go with the e-fan install. So what is the differance between the $7 one from LFP compared to a $25ish Hypertech from other places? Does it do something else special that I am missing or is it all in the name?

It has to look like the stock stat with the extra spring and washer on the bottom. Do not use one that is not of this design.

Oh crap! Thanks for the pic man. The one from LFP does not have the lower spring portion. Can you please educate me on what the differance makes please before I return it. Thank you.

Russ.

Did LFP recommend the stat WITHOUT the spring? Or did you just order it because it was cheaper?

I ordered the e-fan and he recommended the stat and a new belt. I asked him how much for the stat and he said $7 and I said that was a good price sure. That was about the extent of it. I mean crap i figured i would get a stat that should be used or the proper type. So is this current one your standard 160 stat for a auto or whats the deal?

A lot of people run the 170* stat with e-fans including myself. Did he give you any reason why you should run the 160*. I also heard of people throwing check engine lights with the 160*.

Ya got me as to the answer. I was just wondering why they would recommend that Stat if it does not work properly.

Well since I am going to return it I may order a 170 from JDM. Do you know if the stats he sells or Hypertecs?

Initially the decision to go 160 was all me I cant point at anyone else. I did do a search and saw that allot of people do run 160 and some 170 and all the debating that goes with which one is the best to use. I think I will use a 170 now as a happy medium.

Well you got me to man. I know he will ask why I want to return it though and he may argue the fact that it is not the "proper" type. Im still wanting to know what the differance between this one(non spring) and the other(w/spring) is as far a function. Trying to learn a little something here.

Do places like Pep Boys or Auto Zone sell the 170 stat?

Auto Zone can order them. Just go in there with the Hypertech part# and they can order it. Other wise they may look at you like your stupid. I dont know the 170 part # as I use the 160. Just depends on the climate you live in. Colder climates may expierence a ses light because the engine can not get to proper operating temps. Warmer climates will be just fine as mine has.

The Hypertech t-stats are made of stainless steel. The other ones are made of brass. Theres your price difference.
