Who has built their own motor?

My dad builds all his own race car motors and wants to help me build mine. He has built all types of motors like his T3/T4 turboed VW bug and lots Stroker small block chevys.
Hes says he can do it . What do you think? Ive got a block and crank sitting in my garage just waiting. Are they that much different? Any tips ?

I have built several.the big thing is the torque to yeild bolts, almost all of them in the motor are, even the side main cap bolts.ALSO if you bore the block have it torque plated during that with the correct torque values the block flexes ALOT and the cylinders egg shape during the torque process when installing the heads if you don't.Also if you can use a dial bore guage to measure clearance instead of plastigage.[you will be surprised when you do]ON the main bearing clearances if you measure on the parting line of the cap verse the vert. The block and crank that I have has no miles on it . It was a crate motor and the ford tech that installed it timed it wrong and it dumped a valve. There is piston damage but no damage to the cylinder . Do you think I should still take it to a machine shop seeing that it is a new block? I know of a place close by that has the tourqe plates.
Thanks for all your input

That is up to you.I would atleast check to make sure the cyl are round.Bet you will be surpriced on that one.More than likely they are out of round about .002 which if you hone that out you will have loss fitting pistons,so you pick your poison.Stan
