Low rpm, high boost pinging anyone?

just out of curiousity, but anyone experience this? basically, going on a highway in a high gear, then give it some gas. Instead of dropping to a lower gear right away, the boost jumps up and the rpms stay low. then sounds like a lot of pinging going on. the a/f about that time seemed to be around 13, but given the low rpm does this even matter?

not to hijack the thread but i was wondering the same thing, b/c that happens to me too. Like a ticking sound, that seems to get more pronounced the longer you stay in it at low rpms. It happens to me when going up a steep grade at say 45mph in OD and the boost guage registering 2-4psi (im stock except for JLP filter).. it annoys the crap out of me... another thing i was thinking was a possible exhaust leak? i dont know. anyone else?

TomK,

I'd say that you ought to either back the timing off a bit or run a better grade of fuel. Under 6+ psi of boost you don't want any preignition.

birdy111, maybe your not hearing preignition? maybe it's just normal exhaust? Kinda like when a car has headers.. you can hear it much clearer than when stock. (my Lightning w/stock exhaust has this sound I'm talking about. But it's normal)

I've heard the same thing. But under really no boost at all... may just off vacuum, but no more than a pound or two showing. But I mainly hear it out of my left ear, to the let front of the truck, right where the intake sucks air... it may just be from that. Not sure, but it bugs me too. When I jump on it, I hear none at all. Just at that low RPM point. I don't hear it much, and I find that changing your fuel filter often helps. Our trucks need as much steady clean fuel as they can get.

I always try to take it out of O/D when I'm going up hills and such. Just to not bog the motor in traffic.

Finally, when I told JDM about it, they said it could be a form of cavitation... or if not, a slight "tinkling" does no damage if under no boost.

Good luck,

Mine does the same darm thing. When I'm on the hiway(60-80 MPH) on an uphill grade, I give it enough gas to accelerate but not downshift and it definately pings (preignition). Like you guys, the truck is fine at WOT. Tried better gas, changing the filter, backing down timing, ect. but no dice. It is a real pain and if I could only get a tuner on the phone it would be nice to pick his brain. If anybody knows or figures out what it is it would be greatly appretiated.

I had the same problem low end detonation with a JDM tune on a super chip. Got a new tune and haven't heard it since in any condition.

May just be carbon build up...try running a bottle or two of Techron additive in the gas tank. Auto Zone, etc carry it. You'd be surprised at the difference in just a tank or 2 of gas.
