Cany they be installed with the original grilles removed in their entirety ? or just as an overlay to the stock grille ?

You'll want some some of frame inside the openning. I cut out the bars of the original grill...

no

i put mine in no problem. Removed the stock grills completely. The only problem is the grills seem to move around a bit and scratch the paint.

I've got mine in with no original grill...had to 'rebend' the outer edges of the Street Scene grill to get it to fit the opening. Grill is in with zip ties and two body push pins at the lower portion of the grill. It's never moved and I don't expect that it will.

I put mine over the stock grill cause I didn't know if I was going to like it or not. I do like it and only at certain angles can you see the stock grill behind it.

I installed the SS grill right over my stock grill as well. Zip ties held it in nice and it was a snap to remove it to go back to stock. I am going to buy a different grill for my 04 L, just haven't decided which one.
