Angry Blown out plugs need new heads !!!

I have a 01 L' that has blown a spark plug out of the head and took all the threads with it. The head now has no threads to put another plug in. I took it to my local ford dealer. They said they can not helacoil it. A new stock head is 2 grand. I found 2 port and polished heads, titanium retianers, stiffer valve springs the works. Stage 3 heads from the place that gives JLP there heads. 1600 Bucks for both heads. Has anybody had there heads changed? Ifso please give me the info on this. Hows it run after, performance, price, problems, anything will help. Thanxs

LOTS of folks here have changed their heads (and cams) without problems. I just replaced a stock head a week or two ago for the same problem you have now. it's a common problem.

I've had a set of extrude honed heads with larger crower valves and cams, and now a set of JDM CNC ported heads, cams, etc on my truck with no problems.

I might suggest you look into Patriot heads, as I believe that they are one of the more competitively priced cylinder heads out there for our trucks.

here's a link:Patriot Heads $1195 bare

BTW, the labor to replace your heads should be somewhere between 16 to 24 hours depending on who does it for you.

oh, and another thing, I'm sure somebody will chime in, but you also have the option of going with one of a few thread repair inserts like the timesert or helicoil. they can be done, but Ford does says not to, and ford won't pay for that kind of repair under warranty, so most dealers don't do it even on a customer pay basis. do a search for more info.

good luck.

later,
chris

Timesert makes a helicoil kit specificly for the 5.4. If it's a hole you can get to easily, you should be able to repair it without taking the head off.

Not sure why Ford does not recommend it ? Whats the worst thing that could happen ? If the plug pops out again..... big deal, thats where you at now.

The timesert route would be a MUCH less expensive route to investigate VS changing the heads out.
