rear bumper question, can some please help out?

A couple of weeks back the I was rear ended, the only casuality was my rear bumper, so this evening I went to pick up my truck, the bumper the was installed looked correct but it was solid metal with the plastic covers, the bumper that was on the truck from the factory was plastic covered, can someone please tell me if the bumpers on the newer models are all metal or if the incorrect bumper was installed and if so the correct ford part number, my truck is an '01, thank you for your help. My rear bumper was metal with black plastic on the top portion. My L is an 01 too...
Here is another Lightning showing the rear bumper. The rear top is plastic with the lower is metal that is painted...

Thanks guys, I believe the original bumper on my truck was metal with a plastic cover (similar to the front facia design) and not painted metal as you described above, does this sound correct or even possible, I did not pick up the truck tonight because I believe this is the case, I have the dealer looking into it. Thank's you for your input. Todd

Don- I know I've been MIA for awhile - work, family and all the other things that seem to get in the way of personal time and before you know it 3 months goes by. Talk to ya soon, Toddo

My rear bumper has been scratched beyond the paint, and there's a black surface behind it. It's clearly deeper than the paint, but there's no bare metal showing or any rust, and is actually difficult to even see the large scratch, so I assumed it was a plastic bumper.

Mine is a later 2002.

To my evaluation, the bumpers are all metal with a heavy layer of primer and paint on them. If they had a plastic covering like the front bumber, that urethane covering would be at least 3/16" thick. The rear bumber does have a pretty heavy reinforcement structure in it to allow a trailer ball to be bolted to it. The ball actually sits on the reinforcement, not the bumper itself, so when you look at the hole for the ball, you see the edge of the painted metal bumper. The biggest problem with trying to make a plastic coated bumper would be getting the plastic to properly adhere to the metal. When the front bumper is made, it is done in a mold where the first thing sprayed into the mold is the color, followed by the urethane. I don't know how you'd follow that process with a layer of metal.

I think that if the paint is properly applied and the bumper is a large metal stamping with a reinforcement inside and has the diamond tread pattern plastic caps on the top. it is correct.
