I have the Viper 690XV with 2 way remote. I’ve added 2 sirens, battery backup, hood pin switch, and a proximity sensor. Also added a toggle switch to the proximity sensor, which I can turn on and off for rainy days or times I don’t need perimeter security. Never had any false alarm with this setup. Whichever alarm you get make sure that the installer hides the alarm brain well, and they don’t leave the valet switch in plain view.

Santa's budget minded...pull the fuel pump fuse or just add a kill switch., this will stop all but a tow truck.

If your going to spend money on a alarm system you better have a battery backup with enclose "hard to get to wires" to the siren and batt.....or its useless cause thieves' can pop the lock and disable the alarm purrtty quick if they plan to flat bed or tow the truck.

and no alarm can stop the smash and grab...or pop the lock and steal your stereo.... so keep nothing of value in your truck if left outside at the apartment complex.

I've made it extra easy for the thieves:

My trailer hitch hole. If I run across a bad guy with an IQ, I'm dead.

Magnetic Kill Switch

Try searching on yahoo or similar for a magnetic kill switch. I found detailed instructions on one which you just keep a small magnet on your key chain and pass it over a conceal location and presto. As soon as you turn the truck off it is automatically "dead" until a simple pass of the magnet again. I would provide a link but don't have it accessible right now. Pretty easy stuff from radio shack from what I remember.

I have a viper 791x I got off eBay brand new for $200 and installed myself.

Regarless of the alarm, the installation is the most important part. If you buy a $1000 car alarm and hide the brain under the dash and make no effort to hide it, it is useless.

I've been wanting to do the 791xv myslef. How bad was the install? I have read the install guide a few times, but still dont know how bad I want to try it.

Am I missing something here? Isn't the pats system going to keep the L in its place? I would think that it would be harder to get around than an alarm system. I am assuming all gen 2's have Pats??

Wasn't too bad. I used to install car alarms for a living about 10 years ago and it was fairly easy. Added all the bells and whistles (529 window roll up, domelight supervision, priority unlock and took the drivers upper dash apart and hid the brain right next to the radio. All the wires ran up near the factory wiring at the top of the dash and you cannot see ANY wiring when looking under there. Did have to use a 555T I think to bypass the Pats but it worked great and I still have the protection of the Pats system. Most lazy alarm installers will just remove the ring around the lock cylinder and tie strap an extra key to it to get the remote start to work.

If you have done an alarm before, should take about 4 hours to hide everything and make it clean. If you are a pro, about half that and if you have never done an alarm, probably the entire day. You can get all the wiring info at www.the12volt.com

Awesome alarm and the range is amazing.
