Question Anyone running the stock exhuast with high horsepower?

I'm considering going back to the stock exhaust due to the noise level. I was wondering how much of a performance loss I might have if hardly any. My combo is a built shortblock with ported heads/big valves, cams, Kenne Bell ,etc.... Right now I'm running long tubes with high flow cats and a Mac Catback.

Thanks Mike

Im not sure if anyone has ever tried it. you might could try some different mufflers to quiet it down.

I am running long tubes, high flow cats at the stock exhaust. I like the sound, not too loud, but loud enough. As far as power, I ran a 11.38 @ 120 mph a couple of weeks ago on my street tune, first time out with new built motor. I'm not thinking it is robbing much power if any.

Let me clarify a little. I meant going back to the stock manifolds and cats. I didn't figure the stock catback would hurt much. Thanks for posting that up.

If I raced all the time it would be a different story, but mine is a daily driver and I'd like to have the best of both worlds, so I'm considering a compromise.

Thanks Mike

STOCK EVERYTHING
Dyno'd at 501/615 with 25 Less Nitrous than I currently use,
so I'm somewhere @ 525/625+ now.

Pulls like a Mo Fo from 600 to 6000.
As much as I want a Cat Back, I love the Whine too dam much
to drown it out.

Even with the Built Motor Coming, I will most likely stay with
the Stock Exhaust.

I have bassani stainless steel cermaic coated headers and stainless steel cat-back exhaust. I love the sound of it, I can't think of any car I've heard that sounds better. I think it sounds better then my dad's '04 viper with upgraded exhaust, gears, filters. Not as cool as his gt-1 car though

Say goodbye to the high HP.

The stock maifolds flow Okay, but the stock cats (all 4 of them) are the bottle neck of the exhaust.

as for quieting it down and retaining the power.
I suggest keeping the headers and adding.
1. hi flow cats.
2. Quiet muffler with stock or aftermarket tips.

I have a MAC catback on a stock exhaust (including manifolds) and never realized how loud it was until I let my friend drive it alone and I was on the passenger side when he took off. Whoa I thought, it was loud. But I liked it, it was a deep rumble. However, if I added hi flow cats with headers, it would definitely be too loud.

Edelbrock RPM mufflers are the quietest mufflers I have ever heard, that flow well. On a 9 sec Mustang, you could stand at the back of the car and carry on a conversation without raising your voice. Open them up under full throttle, and they roar to life.

I understand what your trying to accomplish. But just imagine a long distance runner, trying to run with a cloths pin on his nose and a straw in his mouth.

Can he run...sure..........

Can he run faster, breathing better.........

You get the idea

If your dead set on putting the stock manifolds back on, run some decent "cats" along with your stock muffers. Or, I think a better choice would be the long tubes in front of your stock cat back

I know EXACTLY what you're saying. I am doing the same thing. I have LT's and cats in my shop but they are too loud, no matter what muffler you put behind them. With the short length of our exhaust and the mufflers right under the cab it makes sense.

My new Dante motor has fully ported heads and Stage II cams, but will run stock manifolds and cats. I currently have a Bassani cat-back but have a new stock cat-back (thanks Steve!) if I want to be real quiet.

With talking with Dante and others mid 11's are doable and I think a guy could go even faster if he put his mind to it. Mid 11's will be fine for me, at least until the bug hits again.

There is no doubt on a built motor with head work and cams there's power in the lt's and cats. But the noise for me on a 20K per year true daily driver is NOT worth it.

I will post my results when I get the truck back and hit the track. I'd even bet a 10 second slip is possible with some nitrous and the correct race tune.

Jody

hmmm... This at least gives me a few thoughts. Maybe the stock manifolds with the high flow cats and stock catback? Maybe shorties with the stock cats and a aftermarket cat back?

Theres also another reason I'm tired of the long tubes and thats exhaust leaks. I have one on my driver side that I just can't find. I have taken it down three times and I still can't get it. It's not as enjoyable as it should be. If the header leak didn't exist I would probably just put the stock catback on, but it does.

Anything you guys do or try post it up so we can all benefit.

Thanks Mike
