Angry My L hates timing.....

I was running 16 degrees on stock plugs for months - no pinging.

Put "cold" NGK-TR8IX plugs so that I could increase the timing to 18 degrees @ WOT. Ran the truck against a buddy with Cobra and I'm getting light ping at the top of 2nd gear right before the shift into high gear. Temperature outside was 72 degrees, was about midnight. Fuel is Amoco 93 octane.

So much for increasing my 1/4 mile performance by much.......

I guess I'll try 17 degrees.

I don't get how so many L owners can run 18-20 degrees @ WOT with no knock??? Especially in parts of the country where the cold/dense air is much better than the air down here in muggy Miami.

I've been in talks with you during you whole timing issue. I told you that I've now made my best pass on my 15* tune.
With 15* tune in I ran a 12.65 @ 109 ( full tank of gas )
With 18* tune in it runs 12.7s @ 107 ( 1/3 tank of gas )

On a search, I see you made almost 25 more HP at 18*, compared to 15*. Were the weather conditions the same between two runs? Outside temps? Humidity?
What city are you in? Mods?

I wanted to try more timing, before drawing my own conclusions. Seems like many people on here are running 18-19 degrees.

I'm Sick03L over at @ NLOC.
You know all my mods!! Weather was the same as my 12.7 runs. My 60ft was worse 1.88 compared to 1.85s. I was running full weight+ full tank of gas on the 12.65 pass. Cecil is known for being a fast track ( 300ft above sea level ) but it allways has a tail wind to help out.
I did install a FTVB but I doubt that knocked off 1-2 tenths and added 2 mph on a 15* tune compared to my 18* tune.

I'm keeping in the 15* tune and I'm adding some slicks, traction bars, ported blower and a supercooler trying to hit a 12.0 @ full weight.

If you did a search that was my OLD mail ordered 15* generic tune. Not the 15* tune I run now..BIG DIFFERENCE. My 15* is the same as my 18* dyno tune -3*

Oooohhh. How the heck was I supposed to know you are Sick03L on the other board?

Your truck is a real strong runner. I'm hoping the cooler temps make a HUGE difference in the way mine runs. The only good news I found out recently is my friends truck (one that I always draw comparisons to mine) which has the same basic mods except he doesn't have the Apten port......he has run 107 MPH in the past, and the other night he ran in the high 105's, which mine ran 106 (and change), so that gives me hope that I can get 108-109 on a cold night.

What is in your 15* tune now, that is making so much more power than the 15* before?

I think it could be the plugs....I run NGK TR-6's 365 days a year!!!

The "cold" plugs are making it more prone to ping?

Not so much that. I've noted a reduction in power with "cold" plugs. I think you need to get the truck on a dyno and back the timing down to 14. Start from there and work your way up till you hit the sweet spot. A dyno tune can make a WORLD of difference over a mail order or "seat of the pants" tune!!!

ALSO, living in Miami, I don't see a need for "colder" plugs than TR-6's with your mods!!!
TR-6's have always treated me right!!!
