Damn Cold Weather! Getting Detonation!

Now that the temperature has finally dropped here over the last week or so, I was going to hit the track tomorrow night to hopefully see my first 12 second pass. I get on the truck today, hard on an interstate on ramp and it started pinging and I let off immediately.

Now, I have a JDM Flipchip. I called them to see if they could check my tune and maybe add some fuel to be on the safe side. They tell me that they no longer tune the chips and it's all SCT now. Would you guy's recommend switching over to the SCT, even If I really can't get a dyno-tune, but only mail-order tunes? Unfortunately there are not tuners in my area ...

So, SCT or not? Or should I look into a Predator? Can both devices be loaded with tunes provided via e-mail/internet?

Any advice?

two options ...
1. upgrade to the hand held.
2. very light pinging is not bad, just dont run over a hundred continuous...1/4 mile is ok. but if you go to the track I would add some 100 octane and of course make sure your fuel is good.
check your plugs for condition periodically.

yes both can be tuned by e-mail.....when your hand held tuner pings you will have to datalog, get A/F and possibly get dyno runs depending on what your tuner requires in order to get the hand held retuned....its a pain when you cant do it at the dyno but it can be done.

I dont think Ive ever seen anyone post that on this forum before.

If youre getting ANY pinging, stay out of the boost, and sure as hell don't race it. Put some 100+ octane in there and see if it goes away, and get a proper tune.

That's the thing. I don't want to add higher octance fuel. I want a proper tune. My current goal is to run a 12, fully loaded (spare, jack, hitch, etc ...), street tires on 93 Octane Pump Gas.

Now, since I can't get a custom Dyno tune, what is my best option?

my friend has a predator and he ordered it from JLP. He called them and told him what mods he has and how many miles on his truck, the year of his truck, etc. and you tell em if you want a street(safe) or an aggressive race tune. also i think you can tell them the range of temps. it will me mainly running in. They make you a custom program based on all that and they sent it w/ his pred. then you just get them to e-mail u a tune when u make changes.
hope that's somewhat helpful.

peace

YES YOU CAN STILL TUNE THAT CHIP

Although YES IT'S TRUE Super Chip will no longer build Custom
tunes for the Vendors for the Old Chip (as you have)
The fact remains that ALL THE TUNERS have TONS of tunes FOR THAT CHIP saved and can use them "IF THEY WANT TO"

Now don't get me wrong THERE IS an advantage of going
with the New Generation Tuners + Chips (diff being the old are only 2 bank tuning, and the new are 4 bank tuning) this ='s
more options and more adjustability.

I also ran into the same prob with Diablo and although I was offered a re-tune on the old Chip, I decided to go for the new
Black Chip Master Revolution, (I happen to like the option of a Multi Chip cause I can switch on the fly AND DO OFTEN.)

BTW,
I HAVE NEVER HAD A DYNO TUNE, and almost 100% of the people I talk to that go get a new Chip and Dyno session (cost @ 6 - 7 hundred) say the Chip was tuned pryor to the Dyno, and then checked on the Dyno and NOT re-adjusted afterwards.
Another words lets face it, EVERY GOT DAM L ON THE PLANET
has the SAME EXACT MODS, so I think the Tuners know how to
tune them ON OR OFF A DYNO by now

Now keep in mind, I DO NOT use aggresive race programs or Tunes THAT MUST use race fuel. For those Tunes a Dyno tune is a must or say Bye Bye Motor

DO NOT LET IT PING OR YOU WILL BE BUYING A NEW MOTOR

ya thats a bit bold of course lean is bad ! come on now.... your trucks been pinging ...you just didnt know it, light pinging at perfect A/F for making power . Mines been pinging loud for months I thought it was a lifter..

I like to stay in it when its pinging ....it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up

but seriously ...

ben_g99 *audible* detonation (pinging) should be corrected, and there are many things that can cause detonation (pinging) so dont assume your tune is off immediatley, fuel changes, adaptive strategy, egr etc. , no retune can be expected to cure detonation caused by other problems so like I said, If it is your tune and you upgrade to the 9100 be prepare to for possible retunes through the mail to get it right.

BTW:
ben_g99 how did you do at the track ?

Never Mistake OFF THE SHELF, with a TRUE CUSTOM TUNE that happens to have not been Dyno'd. As I've stated Our Top Tuners
(we'll go in alpha order to be fair), JIM, JOHNNY + SAL know EXACTLY what to do to YOUR truck for YOUR Mods. And in most cases can tune a new Chip/Program, and then put you on the Dyno to find out they were PERFECT. Of course there is always the desire to tweak and tune for every ounch possible, BUT thats
not my game, I stay EXTREMLY RICH, and DO NOT need race fuel for any of my tunes (although YES I use it on race day)

So to answer your question, YES I HAVE NEVER BEEN DYNO TUNED
and YES I have now ran (5) 11's, numerous 12.0's / 1's etc....
(let the record show the Wizard is 4 for 4 on the 11's, WOO HOO)

But also understand I am on my 11th + 12th Program’s now, and I have been heavily involved in each one.
I know exactly what I want in a tune now, and me and Johnny communicate very well and he has all my info on file so we can tweak and tune it anytime we want.

I've tried off the Shelf Diablo tunes back in early 02,
prob 3 times, I learned QUICKLY I needed true CUSTOM tunes,
and thats what I have, JUST NOT DYNO-TUNED

As said MANY things can cause a sudden change, all it took for me was ""1"" bad fill up and Wam my filter clogged and I had detonation and a 3 plug melt down. Other things have been mentioned too that can cause it. Of course the other side is,
a Lightning can and will add up to 3 degrees of timing in extreme cold, so if all is good, there is a very good chance you simply need to back down the timing, or throw more fuel at it.

Best of luck, make some calls, you'll find someone to help you,
and please keep us informed.
