Spare tire or not?

Is it better to take off the spare tire for weight reduction or leave it on for more weight and possibly more traction? Just been wondering this. Thanks.

The spare adds weight behind the rear axle, which is good for traction and also improves the ride a bit. The bad news is that it is heavy, which slows the truck down. So if you have a heavy item, but its weight is in a good place do you take it off? Think about it this way: If you have 450 hp 4500 pound truck, you have 10 pounds per horsepower. The stock spare weighs 55 pounds, so it takes about 5 1/2 horspwer to move it. What's it worth to be stuck with a flat and no spare?

You might want to do a search for a thread called "lightening the Lightning"

I assume jalin8 was asking this question, and if not, I'm asking: At the TRACK, is it better to remove the spare or leave it on? WIth stock F1s, has anybody seen an improvement from only removing the spare? Either way it won't be much but if it's good, perhaps it's just good enough to squeak someon into that time they've been striving for.... thoughts?

I removed my spare, but just throw it in the bed whenever I will be going for any sort of distance from home. A can of fix-a-flat works for emergencies too, and it a hell of a lot lighter than 55lb.

I have also removed the front sway bar, wash bottle, wipers and hitch, FYI. All unnecessary items in my opinion.

probie, Assuming your talking track only running.... It really depends on how well your truck/track is hooking.

As long as you can go WOT within the first 10ft then yeah leave it off.

I agree with him, I would leave it off if you can get it to hook.
