Question Better cooling by removing brake dust shields?

A bunch of guys who run their vehicles on road courses were saying that dust shields (both front and back) restrict air flow to the rotors. Has anybody done this and does it actually help?

I don't use my truck on gravel or dirt roads or even in the
winter. I have Ruslow's slotted rotors. I have a track day in two weeks (hopefully above freezing) but I will build front air ducts during the winter.

What purpose do these shields serve anyway?

Thats a nice setup you both (you and Tim) have. I was thinking about just cutting a hole in the heat sheilded and welding a pipe to it so that I can can connect ducting to that. One day I'll get around to it.

Jerry and Tim,
Great work on the ducts.

Well, we went at it all day today. Replaced the rotors with Stan's slotted and dimpled ones and installed Hawk Super Duty pads. The heat shields were removed front and back. Stan did recommend this to improve rotor cooling. I will be building ducting for the front this winter. The rear shields are very restrictive. The rear axle needs to be removed to remove them completely but a lip on the shields appear to be needed for the parking brake. We chose to cut them off very cleanly. It looks great. In addition, we are building complete stainless lines for the front and the entire rear, axle to axle. This is turning out to be a bigger job than expected but it will be quite the set up when finished.

We still have some hours to spend on this but it is coming along very well.
