Well...this is a new one....

I have been having trany related problems recently....basically some "studdering" when I let off...weird shifts in general, and some odd exhaust blurp when letting off as well.

Well I finally had some time to drop my trany pan this weekend and found out why. About six months ago I installed the FTVB...I also installed new fluid and a new filter. Come to find out the filter was laying in the bottom of the pan. I don't know how I was even driving it at all. My only guess is that the seal on the neck is crappy.... problem is the new one I put in is the same...I would have gotten a different brand had I known.....so I just tried to push it in really good, hopefully it will stay.

It did fix all the problems though...truck sounds and runs great again.... anybody else have this happen? I got the filter from One Stop Auto...the only brand they had.

why not just go to the local dealership and buy a Ford filter?

are you using a stock pan? if not are you using a standard filter or a 4x4 filter?

BTW, driving your truck with the filter laying in the pan, will do serious damage to your transmission, so if it happens again, stop driving as soon as you possibly can!

good luck.

later,
chris

The filter that Autozone sells (white box with red and blue stripes) is the same manufacture as the Motorcraft product. Perhaps your pan isn't holding it in place securely? My Ford Racing pan has prongs on the bottom that hold it snugly in place.

sorry, I posted about the wrong brand. I got it from One Stop and not AutoZone....its not the same as stock...it has a metal casing instead of all plastic...I forget the brand though...had a picture of a TransAm or something on the front...

So what do you think could be a long term effect? At least I will know when if it happens again....I probably drove around like that for 2-3 months...

and my B&M pan has two little stubs that are under it...but I dont think they touch it.... Im guessing the seal at the top of the filter is junk...the OEM one was harder to remove

well, the filter/seal must have just been loose or poorly fitting, and when you removed the pan, the filter fell out. if the filter was in the pan the whole time, I don't see how the truck would have been driveable at all. the pump would have no way to draw fluid into the tranny.

the problem is not just that with the filter out it doesn't filter the fluid, but it will be sucking air into the transmission from around that seal instead of sucking fluid from the pan.

so then you get a lack of fluid, loss of pressure, and foamy fluid.

maybe Gregg will chime in because he certainly knows more about it than me, but I'm sure he'll agree, its bad news for your tranny.

so like I said, my opinion, if you notice any of the symptoms again, STOP DRIVING.

and from the sound of things, it would be a good idea to go ahead and swap out that questionable filter with a better fitting part.

just my .02

good luck.

later,
chris

Yeah, I guess it could have just been sitting in position...just not pushed up into the hole. I will wait and see if it start acting up again... such a headache for something so simple....If I had a lift to put the truck on it wouldn't be such a pain.... I hate working on something 4 inches from my face

thanks for the input Chris

so weird shifting and studdering seems to be the symptoms...Just wondering as i did a FTVB a long time ago and swapped it out..then had a softer shifting one put in ...I Replaced the filter that i got with the 4x4 pan and it fit in there snug...should i be concerned as my truck shifts and drive like it should no weirdness...

The truck mostly felt funny when you let off the gas above 40 mph..it made the exhaust pop a little also

You need 3 bearings then, one for each idler and one for the pulley on the tensioner.

It doens't surprise me that is was still working, the filer has to be at least a little in the pump inlet when you put the pan on, it fell the rest of the way out when you dropped the pan. You were likely sucking a lot air though, that's not good. Not worth it to take the tranny out to see how the pump gear is doing if it's fine now, but if you start to feel some slipping (reverse would show first symptoms) you may want to drop the tranny and give it a look see. If the magnet was clean and the fluid wasn't sludgey, Id guess you dodged a bullet as far as the geartrain goes, but watch your reverse engage for signs of damage to the pump.

Hope this helps,

G

Konig,
I had this happen to me twice. Once while doing a burnout and the other while jumping on it from a stop. Basically wasn't ensuring the filter wasn't pushed in far enough.

the first thing I noticed was that going into and driving in reverse was much nicer. The shifts have softend slightly , which is also nice. The only time it does it at all now is after a hard 0-60 blast....but even then its very slight and doesnt feel bad really....nothing compared to before.
Normal driving is fine...no problems. The fluid looked ok...and my pan has 2 magnets now. The one that was in there had some "fuzz" but not much. I have an inline magnetic filter, but the place I ordered it from decided I didnt need the universal adapters to install it...she thought I had a standard f-150... so its on the shelf. What does it do when reverse is going?

Tell me this though, its been a while since it felt right..... so I forget if this is normal.... when Im just below 40 mph....and just barely pass it to 42 mph and let off...it will shift decently hard, with some hesitation...almost like the clutch is engaged too long or something.... any idea?

Steve: Thanks for the hookup

Mine has done that since I owned it, the around 40mph shift is kinda sloppy when your foots not on the gas.
