Question for the guys that trailer their trucks.
Hey guys and gals,
Well if I decide to keep my truck after it gets fixed I think I am going to purchase a new trailer since I will finally be able to go racing again. Just curious if you guys that have bought open trailers go with a 7,000LB GVWR trailer or step up to a 10,000LB GVWR. Doing the math you can get by with the 7,000LBer but am curious what you all are doing. I have found a beautiful trailer that I am thinking about and I think the Lightning would look good on it. Well I think anything would so if I don't keep the truck I can alway get another project. Let me know if any of you have any info. Thanks, -Mat-

I have the 7000 lb trailer...18 footer, dove tail. I bought it in March and trailered to every single FFW event with my Lightning and about 500 lbs of crap in the bed of the lightning. I put roughly 20, 000 (yep...thousand) miles on it. I must be living right because just after the last event I noticed my tires scalloped and found that all four wheels had failed bearings. I had the bearings replaced and repacked. Then on the way to Lightningfest....my left rear trailer tire failed. Turned out the wheel had developed a crack. I noticed my back wheels on the trailer are pointing slightly out now, indicating a possible bent axle. All of these issues has to do with the fact that I am riding the limit on the trailer while driving the dawg out of it.
I will be getting the 10,000 lb set up the next trailer. The weight rating of the trailer includes the trailer weight...which on mine is about 1800 lbs. That leaves 5200 lbs for truck and crap in back.
If you are using it only occasionally on good roads...7000 lbs should be OK. But if you plan alot of open road excursions around the country...go ahead and get the 10K trailer.
Rocks

with steel prices like they are, the price is going up fast compared to what trailers used to sell for. I think trailers are like garages, you can never go to big, both in length and weight capabilities.
We have this trailer and one a little smaller, would have built this one larger if the building would have been larger that we keep it in.

I am also thinking about trailers; what should a decent 7k pound one cost?

I paid 1800.00 for mine in March. It has electric brakes on one axle, bull dog hitch, dove tail, wood floor...wired with lights. Oh yeah...steel ramps.
The fellow I bought it from told me the same as Phil says above. Steel prices are driving trailer prices up.
