Talking Trucks can take corners too!!!

Who says these were only built for driving a straight line?

(Taken this past weekend at the Salt Creek Sports Car Club event at Joliet Junior College, www.scscc.net)

Waiting for the go-ahead (notice the WRX Sti behind me):

Stock springs dip under throttle through turn 1:

Accelerating out of a turn lifts the front end:

I think everyone there got a treat:

1. Only 4700-lb vehicle, and only truck, to run the cones.

2. There was no mistaking I was running - I had the only vehicle where the supercharger whine was louder than the exhaust.

3. I got a little too aggressive coming out of a turn on my last run, and spun the truck entirely around. But I didn't knock over any cones!

They put me in FS (big block muscle class) along with a Z28. Since it was only us, we got clumped at the end with the BS people for award purposes. This was my second auto-x, so I didn't do all that bad but my lines and accelleration control still need a lot of work.

The only suspension work I have done is 2" drop shackles in the back, and adjustible rear anti-sway bar endlinks to put the bar back into alignment.

Remembering that it was only my second auto-x event, I think I did pretty well. I think my best time was a 62.9 second run, which included one 2-second cone penalty. The Z28 was a second or two faster, and most of the (5 or 6) Vipers that showed up were running 55-ish. Those looked like pretty experienced drivers though. Then there were some Focuses and Civics that were running around 67-68-ish. Results aren't up yet, but I finished somewhere in the middle of the BS/FS class - with M3's, 350Z's, the Z28, and some other cars.

It's more about the driver than the car (at least within a class) and I know where I need to improve now.

Lots of fun though!

Yehaw another truck racer. Im still in 2nd in the WTR SCCA street tire points standings. This year has been a blast. I love it when the come up laughing about racing a truck then I had them six second fast time. Im racing FS and have been alot of GTs, Cobras, Z28s, and T/As. However I have also been beat by some of them.

A guy I work with races his Porsche with the local chapter of that club. They stick mainly to road courses like Road America and Gingerman. He tells me the same thing - "you should come by and check us out, but I can't get you in to race, at least not in that truck - the tracks don't allow trucks" Arrogant BS. I can't wait to see him if I decide to join a non-brand specific club and show up to the road courses to wail on their precious porsches.

Sure. Again though, if I get a raise this year and can afford to start doing the work.

I competed much better in F-Stock then I do now in ESP.

The competition in ESP is ROUGH. hehe...my nemesis is a stage-2 ROUSH 'stang. He's like glue on the road. And my one friend with a 996 that shows up now and then is a tough one too.

Nice pics! By the way yours dips I'm guessing you have a mainly stock suspension also. It also looks like you had the same problems - tire smoke behind you along the entire course! Maybe my differential is malfunctioning, but I swear I there was smoke coming from one of the two rear tires the entire time I was on the throttle.

Good times though!
