Replacing The Alternator
Replacing The Alternator
What is the procedure for replacing the alt? It looks like you have to take the idler bracket off to get to it. Are there just 2 bolts for that bracket? Do you just drop it down?
What tools are required for this project?

It's pretty easy. A couple of things:
You have to remove the idler. It has 4 bolts holding it on. 13mm(?) not sure
Make sure you disconnect the battery. otherwise you're dealing with an arc welder. That can be exciting.
The alternator replacement was the first thing my wife has ever done on any car. It's not hard at all and everything is pretty easy to get to.

You will need a 1/2" ratchet for both sets of tensioners. Its pretty easy IMHO.
There are nuts 3 nuts and 1 stud that removes from the idler bracket. The two one top are nuts that spin off the studs as well as the lower nut on the DS of the bracket. The stud on the lower passenger side is smaller ( 10mm I think ) and you wont see it very well unless the truck is jacked up and your under it. But it can be reach fron the top with a little contouting of the arm.
Remove the idler pullies from the bracket, it makes room to get to all the nuts/stud.
Make sure batt is disonnected. When its time to remove the alt first take the hot wire off. then remove the flat plug connection. Now lossen the lower 2 bolts that hold the Alt on but dont remove them all the way ( 90%) The ears on the alt are sloted and the alt just pulls off of the bolts and slides back down on them during install.
You might want to unsecure the intercooler resevior container and make it so that it can move and that will help free up some working room.
Of course the intake boot/maf need to come off as well as the black hold down bracket on top of the alt. Also remove the U brace that holds up the upper radiator hose.
I think thats it!! Good luck to ya.
