03/04 Cobra guys say running the engine with the s/c belt off can cause serious engine damage. Never understood why??? Can anyone explain?

I know the 4.2 will retard timing if it experiences detonation.

I know the 4.2 will retard timing if it experiences detonation.
The ECU uses this voltage signal to determine how much it should retard the timing and on what cylinder it should retard.
Due to the vibrations produced by the supercharger (it does not matter if your making boost or not) the supercharger does cause vibrations due to the rotating mass of the cylinders inside the supercharger it is most likely to close to the same vibrations or frequency range the knock sensor is sensing for.
Since Ford was not able to develop an adequate system to deal with pre-detonation (knock) there is no such unit currently active on the Lightning’s and thus the reason for a higher octane fuel.
