Question Shifting into 4th in the 8th?

THe weather was in the low 60's so I loaded up my boys and we went to the track tonight. I noticed my truck was shifting (I assume into 4th) right before the trap in the 1\8th. I dont recall every noticing this before (O\D was OFF).

I trapped at 85.18mph (which is low for my time 8.17 w\1.83 60') so it was probably shifting around 84ish. I dont think that's normal is it?

no its not normal... you should make through the 1/8th and 1/4 at your power levels in 3rd....are you sure it was not the torque converter ???? I havent payed attention to what MPH the truck shifts 2-3 in a 1/8 mile ... do you feel the 2-3 shift ?

I doubt you were anywhere close to 4th gear, I bet you felt the converter locking up.

I have never shifted into 4th at the track before, and I never run 1/8 mile tracks.

the only time you should be hitting 4th is if you do the 1/8 near 120mph. But 3rd makes alot of sense...our trucks shift into 3rd at just about 80mph.

I bet it was 3rd. My trucks shifts 3rd right before the traps just like you said.

Then it was probably third. I just never noticed it before. It was just SO noticable and almost sluggish.
I remember the 2nd to 3rd and it was a good solid shift.

Thanks guys,

I'm not sure but I think your 1/8 time and mph are right on but all trucks are different..... my truck allways seems to have a low mph compared to the times it runs....

Probably so, I have a couple runs with very similiar times where I'm in the 86mph range but the weather was 10deg cooler. I'm sure that's it.

That 1.83 60' just felt so good (on stock F1's) I knew when I left the line it was going to be a good run. I was just hoping for a sub 8.10

Sounds more like your torque converter is locking up and that's OK.

Well that wouldn't surprise me. I am still having trouble about once a week when coming to a stop. The converter stays locked and I'm sitting in the 3rd or 4th at a light. It's a bear to keep running and take back off again. BTW. The converter has already been replaced and the solenoid, no one can figure it out. There are 3 of us w\same problem and no fixes yet.

Anyway...
I was thinking when I started this thread that they might be related but I dont think they are now.
