SCT Chip or Tuner?

I am trying to decide on whether to get SCT's new chip or the tuner. I guess both has there advantages and they are similar in cost. What do you guys think? One of the negatives about the tuner is that you have to download a new tune and it takes 4-5 mins, for instance if you wanted to race or something....and if you had the chip...you could just switch it over. Give me all your opinions? Thanks!

P.S. - I will be purchasing this from JDM, so Jim would be tuning it for me.

the handheld is the way to go IF:

you have never had a chip installed and there is any chance that you may need to go back to the dealership for warranty coverage.

if you're pcm has already been scraped then your powertrain warranty is already screwed in the event of a catastrophic failure anyway, so I'd probably go with the chips since they are cheaper.

I'm not sure if the SCT allows code scanning/clearing and perameter monitoring like the predator, if so then this is another added benefit. the e-mail feature for handheld tunes is also nice because you dont' have to remove your chip and send it out for reburns like with a conventional chip.

as for chips, like you said, the advantage is instant "switch" program changes without download times.

and they are cheaper than the handheld units.

just my .02

later,
chris

I had the tuner but now I have the "chip" both from JDM. Needless to say the the chip is faster/easier to change the tune.

Keep in mind if your chip or tuner has a race only tune in it you may not want to switch it to race mode unless you have good gas. Generally I keep 112 octane leaded in mine. Gawd that stuff smells sooooooo good with the truck running

Right now I have street (that gave me 535hp on the dyno) aggressive street and race. Didn't dyno the latter 2.

Normally I kept the tuner in aggressive street and now the chip is in aggressive street.

It's hard to say which is better it's a toss up.

I don't street race for any reason so either one works for me.

Well I have already had a chip in the truck, so my PCM has been scraped. I still can't make up my mind though, the tuner sounds good but will it be more trouble than the chip. More suggestions needed, both are alot of cash & I want to make the right choice!

I vote for the hand held.....

I have a hand held 1715 (HP4) and I like being able to change shift RPM points and having the ability to allows code scanning/clearing.

I'm deciding today if I'm going to port my blower and buy the 9100 SCT so I can have a tune for the porting ........my only issue is that I only wanted to mod for a little more power than stock and not to push the stock block when I bought this truck and at 400/493 I acomplished this, and this HP level is pretty safe on the block with AF at 11.2 and good gas..........

but I'm thinking I can squeeze a little more power out and still be reasonably safe on the bottom end.

if 5 minutes between tunes is to much trouble..........your drinking to much caffeine j/k ya......
