plugs gapped too much ???

hey guys... i dont wanna sound like a complete idiot here, but really I dont know so I guess I have no other choice but to sound dumb.

anyway, yesterday my truck was dyno tuned by Jim from JDM... got the new SCT programmer... but I was not able to be present...and my numbers were about 20hp down from my last dyno and only difference is I have added a accufab... but it is a different dyno and was a hotter day... that didnt worry me too much, just kinda discouraging.. but not a big deal because of the differnt circumstances...

but Bobby (guy who took my truck for me) said that Jim said my truck was having problems... said I need a new IC pump and also, my plugs are gapped to big and needs regapped... doesnt sound like a big deal to me, but i dont know much about that...

now, I got 2 questions...

1. would the big gap in the plugs cause a shortage of HP and TRQ ? what effect exactly would this cause?

2. on my way into work this morning, i notice at idle at a few red lights, my truck was idleing ALOT different than it used too... it was pretty jerky.. a couple times it almost felt like it was about to die..

would this be because of the new tune? is that normal?? or would this be because of the plugs... iv NEVER felt this feeling before...

thanks guys, and sorry for the ignorance

If it was simply to big a gap then you'd get some spark blowout at elevated rpms. I had mine at 0.040" and did'nt realize I was getting it too. I changed them to 0.032" at my tuners advise and I was supprised!

As far as surging / idling different? I'd start to look at vacumme lines and such before I'd look at the tune. Maybe something came loose or was just bumped while working on it.

How much boost do you need before you take the gap all the way down to .032

I would regap the plugs to .034"

This was on a superflow dyno, after the first dyno they couldn't get the load right so the numbers will lower a dynojet.

The plugs and the heat can easily cause that drop in power also funky idle. I would get the Intercooler pump replaced as recommended, that can also cause loss of power because your IC temperatures will be higher at WOT so it will pull more timing. If the idle problem persists than give us a call and we can tweak it for you. Call me @JDM 732-780-0770.

I don't know? But I'm pushing between 13psi (hot lapping) on a warm day to 16 psi on a very cold day.

Scott,

Sounds like Jim / JDM saw something while Data Logging that pointed him to the Plugs. As for the IC pump, as said if it's damaged, defective, or not working, THAT ALONE WILL HAVE YOU WAAAAAY DOWN ON POWER, your motor will be heat soaked and no matter how long you cool it down, it will be down on power once running.

Personally I don't buy the Plugs are gapped too large theory, Why you ask ??? because I have a 4 lb lower + 2 lb Upper + Ported Eaton + Cool Air, together giving me A VERY EASY 15-17 lbs of boost, and I've "NEVER" had a prob with my Gap, which is set to .038 -.040 (closer to .040)
AND I'm now through the 3rd summer on the same set, so obviously they work WELL. "I also spray 75HP on top of that".

Now as for the Plugs in general, I personally think TR-6's SUCK MONKEY *** (Flame Suite On) hehehehehe, but I'm entitled to my opinion, and the day I put them in, I HATED THEM, I had a schitty idle, I never liked them, and it slowd me down. The day I switched to Denso IT-22's I picked up 3/10th's through a full 1/2 sec on my previous ten through twelve ET's, and YES I think most of that improvement was Plug related. Some L's run great with them, SOME RUN LIKE SCHITT.

But lets go on the assumtion you WERE running fine before the Dyno. Bad idle, jerking, (missing) and the fact your dyno #'s do seem to be down on power for your Mods, I'd say you either cooked a plug, or a Line is off/lose.
Of course the IC pump could just be frucked, but either way due to the idle prob, UNFORTUNATELY it seems you will have to change plugs. I personally don't like small gaps, plus a Vehicle will run faster with large gap, I see no reason you need to be smaller than .036 - .038

As for my good luck with a large Gap, I do have the Plasma Booster "that all seem to think DOES NOTHING", BUT the fact is, they grrnty you can run up to a full 1.00 Plug Gap TROUBLE FREE with it, AND I BELIEVE IT, BECAUSE IT WORKS FOR ME
